Do you have a vent fan installed in the top of your trailer? If not, you might consider doing it to help with the heat issue. I have a FANtastic vent and it works wonders. It's reversible and you can operate it on the built-in thermostat during cool evenings. I found mine on ebay. It wasn't cheap but they're definitely worth it.

U-bolt question

Postby Jeffmo63 » Mon Jun 28, 2010 6:35 pm

d30gaijin wrote:Jeff,

I like your idea of using 3/4" ply for the battery box (saves welding metal to the tongue, a skill I don't have) but was wondering if the U bolts to hold plywood in place are necessary i.e., could a through bolt hole be drilled in the tongue frame or is it felt that would weaken the tongue frame? I'm doing a 6x10 cargo conversion and was even thinking of drilling and tapping threaded holes for bolts in the top of the frame member only, assuming the tongue frame material thickness will provide sufficient thread using something like a 3/8"- 24 tap.

Also, thanks for the excellent information on your windows install. That's next on my list.

Thanks,
Don

Don, the reason I used U-bolts is because it was the simplest way to accomplish the job. It so happpens I found them in the perfect width and length. I don't think it would hurt to drill and tap but, then again, it is a structural member you're talking about. Jeff

I do not have a vent fan installed. I looked at the FANtastic vents and decided that this would be the one in spite of the cost. Thanks for the feed back.

Here are some pics of the aft bulkhead roughed out. 2 x 3 to save wieght and put together with steel angles in the corners to facilitate disassembly if neccesary. Accordian style door to be installed in opening. Original intent was to put in a cut-down storm door but got too complicated. May do at a later time.

Door

Postby Jeffmo63 » Sun Jul 04, 2010 9:22 pm

Aft door installation. I am not entirely satisfied with the door but for now it stays. Sides to be sheeted with 1/4 AC plywood and painted.

port side window

Postby Jeffmo63 » Mon Jul 05, 2010 9:41 am

This time I did it a little differently. Note alignment holes in the corners of the template. Drilled completely through to the inside. Again, on the inside note alignment holes in the corners.

Port side window

Postby Jeffmo63 » Tue Jul 06, 2010 9:51 pm

Well, here is the window on the left side. Now I have a window on each side and, more importantly, crossflow ventilation. This one went much faster than the first but I don't think it turned out as well.

Vent

Postby Jeffmo63 » Fri Jul 09, 2010 12:22 am

Here I am removing the caulking from the roof vent. Very difficult and had to be careful not to scratch the metal. I had to drill out most of the roof fasteners. This all in preparartion to install a Fantastic fan vent in the roof.

Fantastic fan vent

Postby Jeffmo63 » Fri Jul 09, 2010 8:15 pm

Here is the installation of my Fantastic fan. I am very pleased with it. It moves a LOT of air, is relatively quiet, and I like the thermostat and rain sensor feature.

Spare

Postby Jeffmo63 » Mon Jul 12, 2010 7:53 pm

Per the advice of numerous (and wiser) members, I have removed the spare tire from the tongue. I will carry it in bed of my pick-up truck. Here is what is left.

Today I painted the exterior roof white to help keep the interior cooler when in direct sunlight.
