Re: My "Depotless Home". Cabinetry, 5/19/12

Glad I found this post. Have an old boat and trailer I was going to get rid of. I got to thinking of a way to repurpose the trailer. I had started sketching plans to make a kayak hauler, and mountain bike hauler in one. Was going to build a wood storage box for camping equipment as well. This weekend the wife saw a post from a friend on FB of their TD, and she fell in love. SO I got to sketching a TD on a boat trailer, with the long tongue. This way, I could add a tall 'T' between the TD and the front of the trailer. I can do a roof bar on the TD and that would be my Kayak support, between the roof bar on the TD and the 'T' further up. I can also add to sets of bars (square tubing) just in front of the TD and add another closer to the front (These would be welded to the main trailer beam and sticking out of either side.) Then add wheel loops and this would be my mountain bike rack. All on one trailer. So, again, thx for posting this build, as it solidified my ideas. I also decided to add the details of my idea, to help give another reason to leave the long tongue on the boat trailer.

So the ceiling is on the fwd compartment as well as insulation. Exterior roof soon. Cabinetry is in in the fwd compartment as well with a rustic knotty pine look. Haven't begun the galley layout at all but will have to start the hatch soon I guess! The 12 volt wiring is 3 light fixtures inside and probably 2 in the galley as well as 2 12 volt plugs in the galley and one in the cabin, 75% in. 110 system is a 5 plug strip up fwd with one outlet dedicated to a battery charger and 1 dedicated to run power aft to a strip in the galley and a duplex in an aft cabinet.
Here's some pics I hope! (I have to open them in a new tab to see them whole. Oh well better than nothing!)

Fwd skin is on and a good hefty structural is in for the hinge. Electric is done pretty much, and much of the galley is blocked out.
The electric is 110 in to a multi-outlet strip one outlet dedicated to the brandy new 12 volt battery charger which is a 6 amp Cabelas 3 stage that I got cheap. Is anyone else using this? @$29.00 I thought I'd give it a try. A second outlet takes 110 back over the roof to the galley to another multi strip. I will wire 3 little 110 xenon cupcake lights under the hatch (after I build the hatch)
The 12 volt side is from the battery to a marine circuit breaker panel. 1 breaker for 2 incandescent reading lights, 1 circuit for a dome light, 1 for power to 3 12 volt recepticals and 1 for a 12 volt fleurescent which will be put inside the galley hatch.

Looking really good! Are you going to have the red stripe on the finished product? That has a very interesting look.

With that kind of trailer tongue - I could carry my kayaks in the truck bed still! Looks so good, well done!

Wow Dean, you're really cooking! I've been putting in tons of hours and still haven't started assembling my walls yet.

Didn't we both start at the same time, more or less?

Congratulations on your progress. Your hard work is relly showing through.

I must say that the galley hatch is every bit as much of a pain in the butt as I worried it would be! I'm muddling thru it and hopefully 24 hrs from now it will fit. Need to take about 1/4" off top and bottom on the tablesaw at work. When I got frustrated with it this afternoon I turned to door latches and trying to figure out where to place some pretty cool sort of retro windows. There is a marine consignment shop near here and a whole lot of my hardware has come from them.

Window placement? I can still change them..

Love it. I like the windows on the side. Also, I have those exact light scones. I don't know if I will be using in my build. Nice lights, though. :)

Mind sharing that source, Dean? I might like to check that out. I've been considering using marine deck vents/scoops for full time vents, maybe adding small computer fans for positive ventilation when the roof fan is not required.

Getting the hatch beaten into submission! Xenon lights installed underneath hatch for galley lighting. I'm going to hook them either 110 if it's available or 12 volt when I'm off the grid. Can't wait for dark to see how it works!
I also took the big step of cutting holes in my walls and installing the first 2 windows. They have smoked glass which opens and screens. I really like the way they look!
