More photos of the latest fun. I was expecting a few jobs over the last few weeks to get some funds to get the Birch plywood for the inside but that has not happened so I may be going the cheaper route and using normal exterior ply.

At last Im back, been a few weeks since I last posted but now Ive got some funds available Ive been having a go at the trailer again. Done a fair bit in between the rain showers and rubbish weather and it now stands like this,

The door in the last photo is only placed in as I am making a proper one next week because the window is too high and the top hinge wont fit  . Its been a bit of a make it up as I go along
due to the funds shortage but I think its looking OK, its not ATMA Travelear level ( or any other level for that matter) but I hope to improve on it in the finishing.
The outside is going to be lined( I Think :NC ) with white plastic sheet with alluminium trims and Ive settled on a finish for the inside, maps and carpet. The wires you can see hanging out of the side
are for the orange LED marker lights,, its having white LED markers on the front,LED reading lights, 36LED interior light and a 48 LED awning light that goes over the door and also acts as a drip channel, you
can just see the pencil outline in the last photo.

Havent done a lot today, apart from make the biggest mistake so far  , managed to cut the overhang on the edge of the door off!!!!!

Image

I now have to build the edge up and use a T piece of alluminium to close on the seal

I have managed to get the hatch on to try it for size and it more or less fits,

Image

Just needs a bit of adjustment. .

What would be the best way to hold it up??, its a bit heavy, thought of going for hydraulic arms , any suggestions would be welcome.

To put the edges back on the hatch I would recommend using hard wood and plate joinery (a biscuit joiner).

I'm really liking that simple profile.

By the way, I'm sure you've thought of it, but in your last shot, it looks like you just have regular house door hinges on your hatch, rather than a hurricane hinge etc. you'll need some kinda waterproofing over the hinge area... I know someone on hear used bicycle inner tube with some trim over it...

Hi Mal, they are 4 1/2 x 2 1/2 Stainless Steel heavy duty ball race hinges held in by 5x50 woodscrews, they are going nowhere :D , and the waterproofing of that part is exactly what I was thinking of.

The outside will be clad in 2mm white plastic board called Hygiene Board, stuck possibly with clear silicone(plenty) and ally trims.

KC, Im still thinking about the mistake and how to overcome it  .

Hmmmmm hygiene board (bathroom frp to our friends in the states I think...). Are you working to a standard 8x4 size or have you found bigger sheets? I would be interested if you have !

Was just looking at this supplier... http://www.edplastics.co.uk/Hygienic%20 ... ystems.htm

They do a very handy upvc exterior trim with a nice soft round edge. That type of thing might be a cheaper edge seal that the traditional aluminium rv moulding... And would work well with the angles in your profile.

Thanks for that Mal, bookmarked  . Would be nice done in the coloured sheets  .
There is a place in Coventry that does 8x4 and 10x4 sheets and all the associated trims etc but I want to go over and have a look first.

Also been making the door, looks rubbish at the moment but hopefully when its finished it should look a bit better. Ive lined the inside with some bits of oak I had lying in the garage and will line the inside with ply, cut out the excess, sand it then hope I will have a nice chunky door :D .

Hi Chris,
The camper looks good and so dose the car. I presume that it is a V4, you should be able to tow it ok with that. I am towing mine most of the time with a 1962 Ford Consul Capri, and considering that we have our fair share of hills in this part of the world, it is doing the job quite well.

Gas strut are the way to go with your hatch, especially if it is a bit heavy, as they will make it much more pleasant to lift. It can take a bit of time getting the geometry just right. Also it is a good idea do fit them before you fit out the galley.

Those hinges are good. They appear to be the same as the ones I have used. We were unable to find the hurricane hinge in New Zealand so went with the but hinges, and a self adhesive foam sealing strip in the jamb. Below the jamb I put a small ledge to collect any water that might come through, which is then channeled away down a suitable alloy extrusion which also acts as a secondary backup to the seals on the sides of the hatch. So far we have had no water getting in while camping or travelling in the rain. If this is any good to you i can add some photos.
Cheers Frank.
