anon1 wrote:Hi 225,

Can you please explain more about your trailer #2 rubbing on things?

Like, what part(s) rubbed the ground and how high off of the ground that part was normally sitting? Was it just at incline/decline places where the tow vehicle might be going up into a parking lot and the back of the camper dragged? Was it at speed bumps/tables/etc?

Any details and real world info you can provide is appreciated.
Thanks.

[add] Do you know what the distance was from the axle to the rear of your camper and the height off the road to the underside of the rear part that might have drug? Thanks.

Not sure of the height of the trailer frame. But the wheel center was 33" from the rear of the trailer.

I was pulling it with a Ford E-350. Even with the drop ball, the trailer still sat at a angle. Below is a pic. Also I am going to be pulling the new one with a F-150 with about the same hitch height. And I want them to be a little more level with each other.

If I was going over bumps, or up a inclined driveway with curbing, the frame would rub. I hope this helps.

Just was quoted on bright anodized .040 aluminum. $170 a sheet. Whew.

Painted aluminum sheet and mill finish, $65 a sheet. Sucks I want the bright stuff.

I ordered the passenger side door today. At $329 a piece, they aren't cheap. But right now, I only need one that way I can use it as a template to cut out both sides. Later on, I'll order the driver's side door. So next week when I make the router template, I have the right cut out for both doors.

I won't. I'll use my truck.

Update:

My girlfriend owns a bar rental service. She rents them to parties, wedding, etc... Before I could start on the frame, I had to build a bar frame prototype for a new kind of bar she wants to make. The bars will have the same frame dimensions, but she will have the ability to change the skin of them.

So this is what I had to build first. All that's left is a outside skin and casters.

Frame.

Now onto my camper.

Yesterday, I did the cutting and mock up:

Then today, I started welding everything. But the problem is, the trailer frame sits WAY too high with the spring setup I have on it. So looks like I'll be going to a torsion axle.

Sorry to ask such a newbie question, but where did you source your axle assembly? And what weight capacity did you choose?

Another suggestion? If you're not going off-road, what about mounting the axle on top of the springs? With shackles you may have enough room and sufficient travel in the setup for clearance.

I bought the pipe myself locally, and bought the hubs, springs, and spindles from eBay store R and P carriages.

Here is a link to the hubs and spindles: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Build-Your-Own- ... RTM1562571

Then I added leaf springs and shackles. They sell it all. I just had to weld the spindles to the pipe.

After looking at it. Even though it's sitting a few inches higher than I would like, I'm not messing with it. I'm sure it will drop some once its loaded down, hopefully. Worst case, I'll just flip the axle.

Here it sits before I put it up before I go back to work.

Thanks for the pic. After seeing this, I'll just flip the axle like in the pic.

Since then, I never started my build because of my home brewery build and motorcycle stuff. After looking at the pics over and over, I think I'm going to use the template.

Here is the eBay link: http://www.ebay.com/itm/RV-TEARDROP-TRA ... 0738165041

And the trailer:

I'm going to try to make it as much as these as possible, but with my touch. Well, here goes nothing.

Very cool doors how where these done. I'd like to try that 8)

To guess, I would say that the panels are relatively thin. They probably plunge the slits on the table saw, or maybe even on the powered miter saw, then basket weave a dowel in between.

It makes quite an impressive display for such a simple technique, and caught my eye as well.

I suppose the slits could also have been done using a utility knife and a straight edge; less void space that way.

Another possibility is that he panels are stacked up using thin slats, assembled piece by piece, fit into grooves inside of the stiles. Any of these methods could work quite well.
