Lance and Becky's Sagwagon - Paint, First Topcoat

Postby Oldragbaggers » Wed Jul 11, 2012 6:59 pm

This will be a super boring update. Pictures of an off-white teardrop....OH MY! Bet you guys have never seen that before!!

But it's been a while since I've made an update, and with the recent power outtage and heat wave that halted all progress for me for the entire week of my vacation, I was just dying to show some progress so you would know I am still in the game.

Anyway..... The exterior paint will be done soon. So far I have done 2 primer coats (Interlux Pre-Kote), 2 transition coats (half primer, half topcoat), and 1 coat of topcoat (Interlux Brightsides, Matterhorn White). Sanding with 150 grit paper and wipe down with brushing liquid in between the primer coats. Sanding with 220 grit paper and wipe down after the last transition coat. I will do two more topcoats in the next two days.

Here she is.

..Never doubted that you were still in the game, Becky. :)

The trailer looks nice. What kind of paint did you use? It looks like some kind of enamel; but, it could be boat paint or....?

That looks very nice. Your hard work and diligence is paying off.

I had not heard of mixing primer and top coat. Tinting primer, yes, but mixing it with paint, no (however, I will admit that this is not an area that I am knowledgeable in). Is that something that is recommended by the paint's maker?

That is making for a great looking finish Becky. I'm getting very interested in the Brightsides paints after seeing it in use on a couple of builds recently. Roller application? Gotta love shiny finishes. 8)

Interlux publishes a pamphlet on the best way to use their products and they recommend that you do at least one "transition" coat with half and half primer/topcoat. I only did two because I mixed up too much paint and didn't want to waste it.

I really like the look of the routered edge between the sides and roof. Expect to experience a little "deja vu" with my build :)

It is a roller finish. Up close it does have a slight orange peel finish. I wasn't going for mirror finish because my fiberglass finish wasn't flawless anyway. But it does shine. We've been using Interlux paints on all our boats for many years. They are tough, very abrasion resistant, maintain their gloss for a long time, and are very easy to recoat and freshen up . We like the Brightsides because it is a one-part and easy to work with.

Thanks!! Not putting on the trim over the edges eliminates a whole lot of screw holes. (And some expense too.)

Becky,

Your teardrop looks gorgeous! Classic profile, classic color and great execution - what could be better? The radius edges are icing on the cake.

BTW, thank you for the report and techinques on the Interlux paints. If/when I build #2, it will be painted.

Take care,
Tom

That looks awesome. Did you get your paint online? If so, where? Got a URL?

Thanks Mike. You can buy it at any West Marine, but you'll save a considerable amount of money through Jamestown Distributors, and orders over $50 get free shipping.
