This is why I'm skinning mine in aluminum. I don't have a lick of talent for designing or choosing paint schemes. :(
I'll burn that bridge when I come to it.

Here's a color scheme my wife wanted to see:

She also likes #4 and #5, but isn't sure in which order.

KCStudly wrote:I also rank them as 3 and 5 (either/or), but would also consider 4 if you are wanting to be a little more unique. If 3, I would carry it onto the front box, too.
#4 was something I hadn't even thought of until I was looking for random alternatives just to give other choices, but I think I like it. I haven't seen any other trailers with a similar design.

I like number 2, but what if you curve it to match the profile of the top? Just a thought. But I like it anyways.

I think I like #4 because it is not the usual paint design that we expect to see.
#6 looks like a wrapped present.

Re: 4-Day Weekender - Primer!

Postby Kharn » Fri Aug 29, 2014 1:36 pm

The first coat of primer is on, well, except for the curb-side forward corner. I found a ~3" long air bubble right on the corner as I was wiping all the epoxy dust off the trailer prior to painting, so I had to drill and fill that. I taped around it with painter's tape so I'll touch that area up later.

I also completed cutting all six of the light panels. The third through sixth went a ton easier when I realized my Dremel had a circle-cutter attachment, so those took about 2 minutes each instead of over an hour, but they only had the large light hole and not the nightlight or switch. Cutting the switch panels for by the door is definitely not going to be fun, the switches are supposed to fit in a 3/4" round hole, but they require significant hand fitting for holes made by either my Forstner or spade bits. :x

Now I have to run to Lowes to grab more primer, 1" insulation and beadboard...

Keep in mind that I've already claimed incompetency, but #7 and #4.

Your build is coming together nicely.

Over two hours, and two different stores, but I have the most knot-free birch beadboard around.
I had to go for the unfinished birch since the finished stuff was MDF-core and also completely junk as far as appearance went, a ton of knots and even voids. So I'll finish it with semi-gloss polyurethane.

Here's the cut sheet, my saw and Forstner bit (for the sliding door finger holes) are going to get a work-out.

Thanks! It is great to see things starting to fall into place. Our TJ chapter is going camping mid-October and then again in early November, I'm trying to convince my wife we need to make both trips to get more than one use out of it this season.

Here's the tan against the primer in the galley to give a better idea of shade:

Re: 4-Day Weekender - Paint

Second coat of tan paint is on the exterior. :D

After seeing the primer-white galley, my wife has asked that we reconsider the galley color because she doesn't like the white. All of the galley cabinet pieces have already been completely painted and are ready to install. :x

I got bored while waiting the four hours for the paint to be ready for recoating, so I cut the wood and started putting together the rings for my surface-mounted boxes.

Re: 4-Day Weekender - Paint

So I need to make a pair of brackets (out of 4"x4"x3/16" angle aluminum) to wrap around the edge of the hatch to the side wall to use Southco V7 latches to hold it shut, perfect since we are visiting my parents for the holiday and they have my DRO-equipped milling machine in Dad's woodshop. Sounds simple, right? Well, the DRO computer didn't boot when I tried it (I'll admit it has been 2+ years since I last used it), so I had to find the source code for the software and paperwork for the encoders to determine the calibration figures to use on a different PC, after 3 hours, I finally got it working again but it's too late to do anything with it tonight. I probably could have done the work manually in that time, but the DROs will make the job considerably easier, and decrease the chances of ruining a piece and having to start over.

So here's what I was working with this weekend, and what the angle aluminum originally looked like:

The DRO software looks like its from 1985, but it does the job. This time I made sure to back up the software and record all the settings in case the "new" computer fails too.

And the finished product. The rear one shows the line where I'll cut the body vs hatch sides apart with a hack saw later, after I use the single piece to locate the screws on the body (since hitting the big rib at the bottom of the hatch is harder than simply screwing into the 3/4" plywood side).

Each side of the bracket will be held in place by six #10 screws, I figure that should be more than sufficient for holding my hatch closed.
