roswell build

Postby dandan » Thu Apr 30, 2009 12:20 pm

Greetings, :)
& thanks for your kind comments.

another 3 hours on it today.
most of the time spent welding & some adjusting the joints where needed.
the 6 main vertical body joints each have 6" of weld starting at the roof.

sitting on an office chair, capping the inside roof welds.
Image

inside looking forward.
Image

inside looking aft.

im afraid its going to be like this for another 15 build hours at least.
not too interesting for you guys.
:(
will post more piccies when the chassis is underway.
would rather have welded the body up on the chassis.
cant have everything.

the best bits of advice i can give anyone who has a welding torch
in one hand & a bucket on their head is.............

------- Tack the joints as best as you can get it before welding, dont weld it &
think its easier to adjust it afterwards. it just isnt !
------- Allways practice the weld on a bit of scrap first. there is nothing like
blowing a big hole in the work before you even get going.
------- It all takes practice.
------- Dont lose your rag, its just a bit of metal !

got to work the weekend.
hope to be on it again next thurs & fri.

best rgds dan.

Dan I do not know how you are going to finish the out side, so this may not apply. But if you were to do any body work, it will be much easier with the body and frame separate (do not ask how I know that). Looking good by the way, sept the door needs to be on the kurb side.

Te easiest way to get the door on the curb side is to do it in PhotoShop. :D
Still graced with two eyes and ten fingers (due in no small part to luck!).

Just when you think a problem is solved, an uglier result replaces it.

In the looking forward photo, that can't be the permanent location for the flux-capacitor. They have to face forward from the rear in order to work....

Isn't the door is where it should be? In England, don't they drive on the opposite side of the road from the way we drive here, in America?

Am I being a dufus-gufus and missing something?

Obviously, you're very experienced at welding. I'd like to be able to say that it would be 15 hours to the next milestone point. I wouldn't even hazzard a guess at how long it would be to the next milestone when building a bird house!

Yes you are missing me being silly, I may be getting older, but I refuse to grow up.

It's been done before - to sell the Polish-made Predom caravan (travel trailer) in Britain, they put it on the chassis backwards (right hand photo):

As the body is moulded glassfibre (US: molded fiberglass), this saves the huge expense of making another set of moulds with the door on the left.

Andrew,

To my eyes, it looks as good going backwards as it does going forwards. It's a cute little trailer!

forwards-backwards

Postby dandan » Mon May 04, 2009 12:50 pm

im with you on this one Joanne,

to me it looks like the right hand photo should be the original orientation & the left one modified !
suppose trend & fashon may have a bit to do with it.
(must say that trend & fashon missed me out)

Andrew, if you are reading this, could you give some clues to your wealth of knowledge on trailers ?
its quite awe inspiring !!!
great website you have there.
:applause: :applause: :applause:
think i can just remember the quasar being showcased on tomorrows world
or top gear with William Wollard presenting.

my late father was a prototype design engineer.
he wasn't into caravans/trailers, more tents & running clapped out roots group cars.
im sure he would have been into t&ttt's if the internet was available when he was. (& the two met.)
best rgds dan.

I agree entirely. The original layout makes more sense (heavy bits at the front, dinette looking out the back), but the shape looks better the other way round!

We all remember stuff that matters to us, and sadly this is what seems to matter to my brain.....

Postby dandan » Wed May 13, 2009 7:43 am

Hello Guys,
hope you are well.
:)
only 1 hour welding on it today.
on the posotive side this means im 1 hour closer .
got to order more window trim.
didnt know i was going to give it some eyes when placeing the original order.
also purchased some 1200 wet & dry for finishing.
this may be a little too fine a grit but it was cheap!

will include piccies when onto chassis or anything else interesting.
still got the fenders & door to make yet.
the door will be the most demanding & interesting me thinks.

best rgds dan.

I have built the door before, unsuccessful and most difficult. But those fenders make me want to pull my hair out and make the door look easy. Then again this is from a man toooo scared to build the fenders.
