July’s progress was impeded by triple digit weather, the IRG camping trip, tow vehicle shopping, and lifting roof revisions. Therefore, this progress report may not dazzle you but it might be of interest to some.

For the curious, below is a picture of my new-to-me Jeep tow vehicle. I may be eating lots of low-cost beans for dinner for a while; but, this should pull the trailer through the mountains just fine.

Now, the MyAway update:

The lifting roof has been bothering me because of its angle. Since I still had the lifting sides leaning against the wall, I took a picture of the tops of the folding walls, to help explain what I viewed as a problem:

As you can see, when the roof lifts, the end portion will change position from over the opening to several inches back, as it begins the natural curve radius from its hinge. This would leave about 7â€

Hmmm, can't quite picture the issue but it sounds like you've figured it out. Those lifting roofs do take a little bit of noodling, don't they.

I don't know as I fully understand it either.... but I'll wait for the big reveal.

Sharon I have a feeling when your trailer is done it will be copied by others, it has been very well thought out and built.

Sharon; would it be possible to have a fold down section that attaches to the rear wall? Once the roof is raised; this would fold up to seal that area.

Here’s a better view of why I feel I need the eve:

Image

In the above picture, the roof is only lifted 2 feet. (The garage ceiling prevents lifting to the full 3’ height). The more the roof is lifted, the more exacerbated the problem becomes. Still, if you look at the previous picture and then look at this picture, you should be able to see it. The added eve frame is that solid right angle/curved piece on the right side of the picture. In the previous picture, you can see that the rear corner of the eve clears the opening and sits in front of the docking lip. Where the eve starts at that corner is where the old roof would have ended. When the roof is lifted, you can see that this eve corner at the end of the old roof area is well behind the opening. (If you lay the edge of a straight piece of paper on your screen at that corner of the eve edge that is closest to the original frame and closest to the front of the picture and bring the paper edge down to the docking lip it may help you see this better.) If I had stayed with the eve-less style lifting roof, it would have left this area more vulnerable.

Another point that is shown in the introductory drawing but may not be clear is that this roof lifts up in the front; which, like a door that opens from the front, might be described as a “suicideâ€

Whew...glad I didn't miss it while my 'puter was on the fritz. Looking good Sharon.

My trailer will be a tad longer than yours...but as you are thinking about weight, so am I. I have an old tent in storage that I'm looking at as a donor for the pop up sides...and I love the eve idea, especially for fabric sides.

Thanks for the vote of confidence, Johnny. I've been slacking off this week and doing "Honey dews" (Honey, do this and Honey, do that). Things around the house get behind sometimes. Gotta get back on that trailer before I ruin my health with "builder's guilt".

Sharon,

I've just viewed your build thread for the first time and am delighted to see that you've blazed a path toward a modified Compact III. I too am going that route, albeit a bit larger. There is much for me to learn from your experience and I'll certainly read and watch with interest.

Sorry, All....

Today was the last really good weather day for a while and I've been out in the garage, trying to make good use of the cooler temperatures. I haven't logged on since last night. Wow! There are some hungry readers out there!

Even though I've been working hard, it's been on things that either can't be seen or that may not mean much to you. That's because I've been working a little on several different things, none of them completed yet. However, I’ll try to post pictures and an update by late tomorrow night.

MyAway build ...Roof Eve

Postby mezmo » Wed Sep 01, 2010 2:38 am

Hi Sharon,

I enjoy watching your progress on your unique design.

Since you're 'inventing' the roof eve extension why not
go ahead and give it a unique name -

Such as: The "Pompadour Roof"

I'm sure Elvis would approve!

Sharon,

It's good to hear your build is still moving forward! Everyone's anxious to see your Compact TTT.

I understand the part about not posting pictures. Very little of what I've done during the last four days of work is "picture worthy."

Although your build is further along than mine, I think we're both to the point that the light at the end of the tunnel is not a train.

Take care,
Tom
