Cliffmeister2000 wrote:That looks mighty sharp, Rian! I remember a friend who started a fire in his new fireplace before the mortar had dried out completely, and it blew up on him! How long do you suppose you will have to wait before cooking?

Hi Cliff, I can cook immediately, as I have a 10mm steel plate, which is on a bunch of 6mm steel rods, on top of the concrete worktop. I also bought some "lava rocks" which worked real well in the Webber BBQ to add to the heat retention, which will go into the steel tray.

I trust all these precautions will work.

My biggest concern is smoke, based on the ratio between front face opening and chimney size.

Here is a pic or two just for Cliff.

Job is kind of done now.

Nicola has asked me not to add a roof as she does not like the idea of it.

Harley, security cat, building inspector and general helper in the garage and anywhere that power tools are working, giving it a once over when I finishe tonight.
Last thing to add will be a custom made Stainless steel grille and frame, hopefully next week.

Thanks Cliff, we bought the place for its rural setting, and also the 30x30 foot garage at the bottom of the garden.

The thread has now been updated with the first cook and bake off.

Hope you like what you see.

You get rain in June? How novel. I was 18 before I saw a "summer rain" and had to visit Montana to do so.

Cheers,

Gus

LOL, we actually bought the apron for my brother in South Africa, still need to post it to him, but Nicola insisted I wear it.

Thought I would do a few pics into Tinypic for those who cant be bothered to follow the link to my main build thread.

This is when the fires got up to speed.

Ribs, Sweet Thai Chilli sauce chicken strips and very good Cumberland sausages.

Oven at full chat, I did learn from this first time use that ideally one needs to preheat the space about 20-30 minutes before using it.

Resulting in this beauty, which I was very pleased with for a first try out.

NOM NOM NOM NOM.... !!!!

Cheese and Garlic bread.

Rain has been a bit scarce this year, we had 15mm last week, and nothing else the last 10 weeks, it is really dry over here, especially where we live.

Back to your question...... You should know, rain and wet is theoretically a 24/7 thing here.

I once asked a friend/coworker from England what it was like there. His reply: "It's cold, foggy, and rainy, and that's during the summer!" We visited in October '86. Wx wasn't bad for our visit.

Currently we've experiencing the "June gloom". Overcast in the mornings with some "burn off" in the afternoons. Comes in from the ocean.

Cheers,

Gus

Hi Enigma, I see you are from KANSAS.

Saw a band "from Kansas" last week www.truckstophoneymoon.com and one of their songs is titled Mardigras in Kansas love their interpretation of life.
Anyway, back to the bread.... I hate to admit it, but it was as easy as falling off a wall.

Self raising flour, add some mixed herbs, grated strong cheddar cheese and mix dry ingredients by hand, add some milk slowly while mixing by hand in a bowl, once nice and sticky add a bit of flour to release from your mixing hand..... plop it into the baking pan and stick in the oven at around 180'C for about 30 minutes.... use common sense and if it looks and feels good, cut it up, butter and do not stop eating till it is all gone.

Hope that helps.
