Andrew,
its 125mm sheet with 2 x 50mm curved ribs & a series of 50x70mm long inner pieces to fix the inner lineing to.
will post a different view to make it all a bit clearer.
takes bloody ages to fabricate for something which will be hidden from view.
hay-ho.
head in a bucket for a bit more soon.

when its done, will be dragging to the NE for a jar with you.
im paying.

Postby dandan » Mon Dec 08, 2008 4:07 pm

got 4 hours on it today.
it takes a while to weld the struts up.
may try to mig them instead of tig.
Image

couldnt resist a quick clamp-up of the non-door side to see the profile.
Image
Image
will use stainless blind rivets to secure the outer skin to the struts.
may rivet a strip behind the welded joint to give it a bit more strength too. :) :) :)
on it again tomorrow. will post more pics at the end of play.

as allways your comments are welcome.
best rgds dan.

Hello All.
4 hours today.
decided to profile the body panels. it will aid in assembling.
"how do you do that ?" i hear you cry.
with a big bit of tube & 15 stone of un-flexed blubber, thats how.
Image
i dont mind over-bending the radius, it easily comes back.

riveted the strut in the door side.
Image

then started the non door side.
Image
may be on it tomorrow if my mate who is supposed to be doing my
garden lets me down again.
now its tome for a Hardy & Hansons Old Trip.

best rgds Dan.

3 hours today.
mostly repair work, i damaged part of the sheet & had to replace it.
Image

then got on with drilling for the 2 struts on the non door side.
Image
made a start on riveting them on.
the roof is next. this will be fabricated in sections to avoid material wastage.
then i may start to tack the panels together.
thats when it becomes alot more interesting !
still need the material for the 2 front panels, door, base & fenders.
collecting it next weds hopefully.

best rgds dan.

Dan, I am impressed. Most feel that they want to build a 4 ft wide teardrop because a 5 footer wastes too much material and it would cost more. I am amazed at your pre-planning and attention to detail. Working with compound curves, stainless steel, rivets, welding and grinding and such, sure is more complicated than sawing wood, glueing and clamping. Keep up the good work, keep posting those pics, they are absolutely awsome. Thanks for keeping us up to speed.

I am in awe (and hugely jealous) of your skills! The build looks amazing and I can't wait to see it in the flesh (metal?).

After I have finished number two build for my daughter I have been considering building one based on a Type 15 Star Trek shuttle but your project puts that in the shade.

Cheers
