Hi Michael,

You are making good steady progress there and your workmanship is brilliant. :applause:

There'll be some transformation when you get round to painting. Have you settled on a paint scheme yet? I can't wait to see the results when you do.

Regards,

Everyone here rushes to the journal when an update is posted. Holding our breath each step. Such perfection has caused a steeper and steeper drop. Fearful that the next step will not live up to the last. Then he pulls another rabbit out and ups his game!
The last step is only as good as all the previous steps. (paint is all prep). But the last step can cover all that hard beautiful work. But we know he will pull it off! Looking forward to seeing this on the road.
I am worried that nothing can be done to top his previous work but we all know he will!

Cheers!

Thank you Larry. We have been designing the paint scheme but nothing final yet. A lot of sanding yet to go!

Thank you for the encouragement! You're right, the paint job is only as good as the preparation.

Remember there are two schools of thought when it comes to painting a Teardrop.
1. Do you want it to blend into the natural environment while camping. (warm browns & greens)
2. Do you want it to stand out. (Bright Reds, yellows, purples)
Sort of like, do you wear camo when you go hunting so no one knows you are there. Or, do you wear a bright red vest so you don't get shot.

You're right about that... But it won't be woodsy camo for this one. Something on the brighter side I think...

Body work. If you've never done it, you'll never appreciate the patience and effort required to do it right and have a desirable outcome. Molding in the seams was a huge undertaking... Something I've second guessed many times along the way. Only being able to work on the weekends has also added to the time it takes to get the result. Anyway, all the "body work" is now complete. When I say that, I'm referring to the glass work, the filler, the grinding, etc. But there is still a lot of sanding and prep work yet to do. It's all part of the process. I'm building a camper for my family, but in my heart I'm building a hot rod, so this is all part of the process when it comes to having a hot rod paint job.
This weekend I got all the bodywork primed with U-Pol's Reface Polyester primer. Its excellent for anything glass or carbon fiber, which tends to pinhole. Everything looks very smooth and even now. I will spend some time with 220 grit and a board to prepare for the final coat of DuPont Urethane 2k primer. A final wet sand with 400 and she's ready for the big game! It's definitely a transformation...

Hi Michael,

Boy - I can't believe the amount of prep. It's really looking great. The edges are absolutly brilliant too.

Thanks fellas... No one wants paint more than me. Trust me on that. I wish I could take a week off and just get it knocked out. Here's another pic with the polyester primer on. All wrapped in glass...

Thank you, too, Dave. Your trailer is none too shabby, either, but if we are ever at a gathering together I don't think I will be parking TPCE anywhere too close to the Astroliner. Michael is obviously a much better body man than I am and I am afraid that a side by side comparison would prove that out from about 20 or 30 ft

:applause:

Dam, now I have to fix that wonky curb side dip. :NC  :o  :R

You guys... :)

I think we have a pretty talented group here following each other. Collectively it's really pretty impressive!!! I'm proud of the way the Astroliner is turning out... but I'm proud of all you guys. It takes a special person to take on projects like we all have. And I appreciate the encouragement along the way. I'm a bit jealous of some of you guys... especially people like Dave, Brian, Tim... who have finished their projects. I didn't start out building this for the project, I'm building it to use so I'm looking very forward to getting her done. The skill, talent and craftsmanship here is amazing. You guys rock.

Agree completly.
While mines ground to a bit of a halt until i can get the trailer finnished ( due to money and time restraints ) im encouraged an just as enthusiastic of other peoples builds from the complex or highly detailed builds to the simple well thought out quick builds.
Mines actualy pretty close but i need a spare 1000 or so to through at the trailer.
Keep up the good work micheal and the rest of you,im enjoying the ride while im doing lots of cranial exercise in holding pattern
