roswell build

Postby dandan » Wed Dec 17, 2008 1:44 pm

Hello All,
managed around 3 hours on it today. :)

finished riveting the non door side.
Image

and cleaned up the welds on the repair.
Image

then profiled the rear panels.
Image

itching to begin tacking it together but i need the space to make the 2 front panels.
wont be getting the material till the new year.
got enough to make the roof & the door sills till then.
the door sills being a bit trickey, so will need lots of time on it to get it right.
want to make the door gull-wing with gas-struts assisting it. got some stainless locker
latches which should secure it ok.

will post again, hopefully soon.
best rgds Dan.

Funny how in every genre there's the "holy grail" someone mentioned earlier. Everyone aspires to it but nobody ever really thinks they'll see it in the flesh (too complicated, expensive, etc.). And then along comes Dan!
Dan, if I didn't luv ya so much for producing a real live "Bigfoot", I'd hate ya!
I guess I hail from a lower level of aspiration and ability, but this has been amazing to see so far. I'm looking forward to the finished project, because everybody needs an ideal to shoot for.
This is going to be a high water mark in the world of teardrops, for sure.
Props. :applause:

Dan, I am again truely impressed, not only with your thorough explanination of what you are accomplishing, but with the forethought required to actually accomplish the ultimate goal. Hey, I am only a right angle, glue and screw kind of guy. and thought I was really accomplishing things that I had never imagined, with the simple medium of wood..

I have to hand it to you, you are building something that is equivilent to the SR-91 blackbird, so to speak. Please keep us up to date, regarding the compound angles, continuous welded joints and their flawless grinding and blending. I can't even imagine the forethought that is involved in that process.

Hey, what do I know, all I did was slap some sides to a floor platform, install some roof ribs and plywood. I can't even imagine trying to figure out the compound angles and radiuses required in your build. Don't make light of it, you are building a perhaps, one-of-a-kind masterpiece that may never again be duplicated.

I can't wait to see the finished product, and invite you to swing on my sunny So Calif abode, to spend some time with a neophite, so I can brag to my friends how lucky I was to actually check out your one-of-a-kind creation. Keep up the continued pics, I can't wait for the next ones.

Postby dandan » Sun Dec 21, 2008 6:58 am

Hi All.
thank you for all the encouragement.
once again i would like to thank Andrew for his nifty CAD skills.
:applause: :applause: :applause:
to tackle this without his generosity would be so time consuming for
me, i wouldnt have entertained it.
Del's jellybelly build log has been a great help to me. thanks .
& thanks to my mate Ian who lets me use a corner of his barn & to T&TTT itself.
without all these contributions, i may not be doing this.

in the new year i have some important assessments at work which i must pass so
the build will take a back-seat for the next couple of weeks while i refresh the grey matter
on rules & regulations. (has to be done)
after this i will be back on the build & posting progress reports.

so its Merry Christmas & a Happy New Year to you All.
best rgds Dan.

Are you going to do the axle and fenders like the original "Napkin drawing"? Any ideas yet?

Hi FastED, :)
decided not to do the double curvature fenders in the napkin sketch for a few reasons,
- time each panel will take on the shrinking machine & english wheel,
- ease of Angib's alternative fenders compared to the above,
- increased chance of having to repair / replace them when damaged, its bound to happen !

also might make them removeable for storage purposes.

may think about making the original double curvature ones in the future if my
conscience gets the better of me & time allows.

hope to resume the building work soon sfter 11th Jan.
will keep you all posted.

Happy New Year to you all.

outrigger wheels

Postby bfitz » Tue Dec 30, 2008 12:31 pm

Since we're talking holy grail here, maybe raising the bar?

I can't imagine anyone would want to make the Roswell with folding outrigger wheels?

http://www.microcarmuseum.com/tour/reyonnah-white.html

I know its ridiculous, but once the grail is here, the site will need a higher bar to shoot for!

Off to find big-foot,
B

hi B,
i reckon on removeing the spats for storage purposes to avoid any damage.
or at least make them in 2 pieces so the outer panel can come off leaving the wheel &
the inner panel fixed to the body. this will allow easy wheel change too.
will cross that bridge when i come to it.
not sure on the folding outrigger concept.
like the microcar link.
