Removed the edge molding, caulked all the extra holes, gave everything a scuffing with a scotch brite, wiped it down and put a coat of primer on it. Then started tearing into the trailer and mocking up the new suspension.
Didn't do anything Saturday, slept and rested. Today I got moving at a reasonable hour, got drill bits, bolts, and more caulk and adhesives. Got the suspension done on the trailer. Axle isn't perfect but it'll have to do for now. Got the new wheels on it, drilled holes for bolting it down, and got a coat of gloss enamel on it.
Crunchtime is on! Waiting for paint, glue, and caulk to dry is hella annoying. Still, got the hatch pretty much ready, same for the door, painted them both today. Got edge molding on all the exposed edges, not as pretty as I'd like but I'm in a hurry. Framed in the door, screwed up on the frame but it will do for now, needs to be done and it'll work. Fenders are on, not perfect but pretty good, think I'm going to get some mud flaps for it.
Alpha 1 can be considered a success! Towing on the highway was no issues, my car towed with no problems, kept up with traffic, and could even pass with it! Only took about 5 minutes to set up and level and was so nice to have a mattress and blankets and be able to stretch out and camp, be warm, and not have to worry about it. Next up, a 5 wide and no hatch. I don't need the storage or the galley outside, so I can use the space as inside storage instead. It will also be easier to keep leaks to a minimum. The tailgate wasn't finished and leaked and the OSB swelled at the edges a little but still, this was a perfect quick build! Alpha 1 is officially for sale.
This one is being built in a hurry. I've got until Friday to make this camp-able. The rain isn't helping and I've got too many projects in the garage and canopy to fully fit it in but I've got the deck built and the sides cut out and did a nice and neat job with the jig to router the radii clean. I need to do some quick patching and sealing, most likely with undercoating spray or whatever I can get cheaply. Ordered the edging today, will be available for pickup Thursday. Hoping to have the sides up, spars in, and FRP laid in place. The lumber I picked up was cheap and horrible, the design I chose made it show it's weaknesses. I spent a good day repairing those issues and making the base usable. Today I was hoping to have the sides both cut out and the FRP glued on but the rain made me hustle to get the radii cut, put it under cover, put a fan on it, and get it dried back out for the FRP.
