So I am starting my build. What is the phrase? 10 lbs of sh*t in a 5 lbs bag. I guess I am building the 5 lbs bag. I have assembled the HF trailer and am preparing to assemble the floor. My first snag. the toilet/shower plan. I am realizing I need to refine it more before the floor is built. I have neglected to think about where the trailer frame is located with regards to a shower pan drop. I have a 6 inch overhange and that is locating the frame right where I do not want it.

I have to shoe horn the bathroom in so some adjustments must be made.

I am considering moving the toilet to the back and the shower to the front. This allows a greater area for a shower drop down. Even still it is far from ideal. The shower pan must be custom made and the shower portion of the pan would have 2/3 of it drop down and another 1/3 of it stepped up. I guess one foot down and the other up would allow easy access to clean the human under  carriage. The toilet use would also be a one foot up one down operation. The worst part of all of this is moving the toilet to the back makes what was simple plumbing more complex. Before the sink shower and toilet were all within inches of each other. If I switch it I have pipes in walls.

Lots of compromises when you design a 5 pound bag. 8)

I started on the floor today. I have framed out the back area with 1x3s. It is very light. I moved one of the trailer support beams forward to allow room for a shower pan drop down. I shall make some 1x3 supports in the center of the metal tailer fram as well, since I am using 3/8" thick plywood for the floor. I am using the existing fenders and my wood frame is built to marry with them and will bolt to them. About 1" of the fender will protrude out past the side walls of the trailer. Here is a photo of the frame not completly glued and screwed yet.

Here is the toilet and sink as they will positioned in the trailer later. The two boards you see on edge represent the positions of the two internal bathroom walls.

Note in my revised layout shown below, I have repositioned the toilet such that it will allow for a partial pan drop down. the shower pan will be stepped as the left side of the pan will be above the trailer frame and the right will drop down from it. The drop down portion will be small, only about 16" x 14". I will have decent elbow room however and places to put a foot up higher. It is a compromise of space and efficiency, but I think it will be highly functional. The over all bathroom size is 24" x 33".

Thanks. It will be snug. There is no doubt that it is a lot to expect on a 4x8 frame. I have made lots of compromises. The bed could be longer (it is 72" max) and there is very little storage space or counter space. If I do any large scale cooking it will be outside on items I bring in my TV. Inside I will have a single burner electric hot plate, a small microwave, an electric hot water kettle, a small cube fridge, and one tiny shallow cabinet for cups and such. that will be it for the kitchen stuff inside.

What if you faced the toilet to the middle and incorporated the area of the washroom with the aisle when in use. Close it off with a partion of some sort. You could use a curtain or a lightweight wall that swung from in front of the toilet/shower to across the aisle.

That was in one of my earlier designs. Ultimately I liked having a bathroom that was seperate and private that did not disrupt everything else.

Very nice design. Could you please give us the overall dimensions?

With the entry in the rear and several of the heavier items behind the axle, I wonder if you might not have enough weight on the tongue to offset the rearward load. If this is the case, then you'll have to use jacks which can be a nuisance.

Also, I'd be reluctant to drop the floor behind the axle because the pitching back there is more exaggerated than ahead of the axle. You might scrape the ground more often than anticipated. Just a thought.

This one should be fun to follow. Please keep the photos coming regularly.

It is a concern about the weight to rear. Though the toilet will be to the rear the icebox shall be forward of the axle. I figure the airconditioner could be something I place in the trailer during transport in a position to balance the load.

The drop of the shower will not be very much. It will not come down lower than the axle. But your point is taken about the pitching under power. I do need to sort out the plumbing for the toilet. This too will protrude downward. I may have some flxibilty there.

Thanks for your thoughts.

Oh the dimensions. The width to the outside of the exterior walls is 62" From rear to front of cabin is 118". The height from floor to main roof exterior is 51" and the pop up is not yet detirmined in thickness. Probably another 3 to 4".

If you are trying to keep the height low enough to clear a standard garage door, then you could have more interior height. My TTT has 60 inches on the interior at the lowest points around the perimeter of the popup, about 4 more inches inside the popup, and 16 inches more with the popup fully extended at its highest point. If you make the sides of the popup out of rip stop nylon or similar cloth, then you can raise the popup to different heights as needed, reduce weight, and gain interior height inside the popup enclosure. If you are interested in this approach, have a look at my build thread.

Good luck, good building.
