Super Size Cabin Car Trailer ( SOLD )

Postby legend lime » Mon Oct 31, 2011 9:32 pm

IH All
well my wife said I could build another Trailer but only if it has all the amenities you know Fresh Water, toilet, Tub, Heat & Air, Hot Water, refrigerator and any other bells and whistles she can think of which is fine seeing how I nolonger have to do the up keep and Diesel fuel of a 40' motor coach. I dimensions will be 14.5 L X 7' W X 7' H I have to give 48Rob the credit for giving me the itch to build another trailer after I saw his Cabin Car I was hooked. This profile will be on the basic idea of a cabin car but only Super Sized here is drawing the roof steps in 8" on each side then goes up to 7' High. More Pics to come,

It looks like you've got a lot done already. It sounds like your wife gave you quite a challenge but you're up to it.

Do the current walls fit out your garage door? It might be an illusion due to the perspective, but I would be worried about the ceiling bump making it out.

RE: More For Inspiration

Postby mezmo » Tue Nov 01, 2011 11:31 pm

Hi legend lime,

Very interesting design! 48Rob's Cabin Car site is really interesting and
inspiring. Here are a few more links you could also use for some additional
inspiration. Even though a couple are of aluminum construction, their
"look" is close to your design, so perhaps some of their details could be
helpful to you.

Here's Grant Whipp's Build thread: Grant's Last teardrop ...???:

Here's the rare Great Western from the late 1940s:

Here's the rare Aero Flite from the lat 1940s:

Hi S.Heisley I started on this at the first of the year by buying items from ebay and the local Rv Dealer I wanted to have just about all of the parts before I started the project. I built the frame in May and have been working on it on and off in between a 23 day road trip to Modesto, CA, Flagstaff, AZ and Biloxi, MS.

I will fit out the doors Just before I started the project I replaced the old doors the I installed on this garage 20 years ago with 8'H x 9'W doors I also took the wheels off and set the brake drums on two car dollies. With out installing the center roof section untill I have it out side under the large leanto beside the garage it will roll out.

Thanks for the info I have looked at a lot of older campers and trailer's for m the 30's and 40's whats going to be the job is getting all the wood sealed so it's rain proof, will more than likely use Epoxy and Fiberglass on the out side.

You're doing a beautiful job. Your exterior plywood looks like it might be hickory; but that's just a guess. Is this going to be a woody?

Will the VW windows be functional, or in a fixed installation?

It will be a woodie and the plywood is Natural Birch I picked up from Peach State Lumber in Acworth for $12.93 a sheet. I did get one coat of Spar Urthane on it today hopefully I'll get some more picks tomorrow.

The windows will be functional still looking for the pop out hardwear most of the one's I have found are for the 56 - 64 and I need the 65 - 72 I'll make the hinges, I picked up 250 ft roll of weather striping for $25.00 at a military Jeep Show / swap meet last month that's going to work out to seal the windows in the recess.
