My First Build... "The Dog House"

Postby MarineSTC » Wed Dec 21, 2011 9:16 am

Well I might be a little early buy starting my build thread but I have started with some drawings to figure out what type of trailer I'm going to build. So in my eyes that is the start of the project. With my work schedule I won't be able to update as much as I would like and considering it will most likely be a month or so before I start the actual work. I will be posting up some drawings and pictures of ideas for the project. So let’s get it kicked off...

Well guys and gals before you start on me to bad I will go ahead and tell you that I am a lot better carpenter than I am a photo shopper/graphic designer on the computer :frustrated: . First off I would like to give my apologies to the owner of the original picture and I would give a name but I have looked through so many pictures I just can't remember. I do know the original TD in the picture is the "Swiss" TD. I just used the picture so I could draw on the trailer to give me an idea of what my finished project would look like.

Well I original was planning on going with the traditional teardrop shape but, considering my lack of tools and the availability to borrow them. This decision came after a lot thought, reading, and looking at others pictures on here. I am going to go with a TTT design but with the size and lay out more like the teardrops. So here you go, don't bust on me to bad.

The size is going to be 4'Wx8'Lx5'H. The actual siding is going to be done out of 1x6 so it should have more of the barn siding look to it. The dog house, lettering, paw prints, and the other designs will done to look like inlay, just going to cut out and change the color of wood being used. The rest will be more or less trim work.

The way I figured it, with the size I can get a twin mattress in the front then I will put a divider wall in which will allow me about 16-18'' of storage/cooking area in the back. That will be on a double door system similar to a normal enclosed trailer. And to top it off a luggage rack on top to tie off any other goodies that will need to go on a trip.

Next up.. The interior walls.

I am going to do the bottom portion in galvanized roofing (tin) trimmed by 1x’s. Then the top portion will be done all in 1x’s and cut at different angles to make a design similar to what is drawn in the picture.

Sorry if the name Dog House has already been taken by someone else. I have seen that everyone on here has named their trailers and I really didn’t have a clue as to what to name mine. Well as I was talking to the Mrs. for the hundredth time about building this TTT she started to get aggravated because I was about to take on another project (I have a hard time sitting still when I am home, always have to be working on something). So needless to say after that conversation “The Dog Houseâ€

Hi MarineSTC,

I like your design and renderings of "The Dog House". Since most of us are at best amateurs, we all enjoy seeing professionals at work - can't wait to see the sawdust fly!

BTW, I believe your trailer photo is from Planovet. Mark did an incredible job on his teardrop.

Take care,
Tom

I like it, but wonder if your heart is set on suicide doors. A couple things to consider that the door will open towards the fenders.
Also, sealing the door to the elements while driving down the road is a challenge and have a better chance with the hinge towards the front. Sorry if I come across as critical, Im just trying to save you a headache down the road.
