The Bummer offroad build

Postby Silvrzuki77 » Tue Jul 24, 2012 10:02 pm

Hey guys Ive been lurking asking a few questions here and there. I didnt want to post anything significant tell I had proof that I am actually going to build a trailer lol. Well let me explain the why. First i hate tents and air beds that deflat on me lol. I do a lot of backcountry exploring specially around death valley and nevada. I have a 3 year old boy and a 6 month old boy and my biggest fear on trips is making sure they are warm and it seems every trip I take it is either windy, raining, or snows on me (you would be surprised how much snow death valley gets!!!). Soo here is my plan. I am going to follow the generic benroy plan on this awesome site but a grasshopper rear hatch and benroy front (at the moment). Will be a 9.5' trailer, on 35" tires to match the tow truck Hummer H3T alpha , have a 20 gallon water tank, slide out fridge for my offroad fridge. Well I finally found matching rims!! Funny how there is alot of stuff when you dont need it but when you wanna buy something everything disappears. Soo I have rims, tires, and I got a set of stock suzuki samurai rear leaf springs with overloads. My 3500# axle with electric brakes on 6 x 5.5 pattern. Im going to build my own frame 2x2" frame and offroad hitch. Once I get the axle Ill move pretty fast on the frame and then sloooooowwww way down on the rest to make sure I do it right lol. Here is my current parts
Image
And here is the tow vehicle

Any comments and suggestions are greatly appreciated!!!

Well going to get my tires mounted today and pick up my steel today or monday. I think I am going to build the frame first and then order the axle. Wanna make sure my measurements are correct and keep the tires in close. I really want a 8' box but I think the extra foot would really help with the rear storage. Im going to tape the layout on the floor again and see. Hope to get some pics up soon. We are having our backyard built and its been time consuming and expensive. Soo hopefully I will have more time soon.
Been going through your guys builds over and over and things keep changing in my head lol

Good plan on the ordering the axle. i bought mine first and i have now found it to be about 2 inches too wide. I took some tape and using the tiles at work laid out the plan as well. people thought i was nuts but oh well i am sure they are no longer talking about it.

Didnt get much done as I hoped today. Spent alot of the time at the DMV. Anyways here's the progress
Got the tires mounted and balanced
Image
II layed2" tape on the floor and tried first the 8' box with my dometic fridge with pillows. Just too tight Soo here it is with a 9' foot box area. I think it will be better all around and let my run a full XL mattress and give plenty of room around the fridge.

Hope I can go grab some steel on monday depending on when the guys show up to start my pavers and firepit bbq island.

Alright I finally got workin on the frame!!!!
Here are the specs
2x3 .095 wall tubing
54" wide by 9' long.
Image
with the 35" tire for fun
Image
I bought a 21 gallon water tank that is 36" long x18" and 8" tall and had wanted to mount it above the rear axle and never though of it being a problem. Even with a spring over the axle tube would probally hit the tank. SO I had to move it forward of the rear axle as you can see in the pictures.
Image
Image
Tried to keep it back as far as possible, I have a refrigerator and thinking about mounting the battery in the rear of the trailer also. Any suggestions? oh an I ran out of gas for the welder so im done for the day.

Sorry for the delay, I finished the roller portion somewhat on saturday. Axle perches are set at the correct distance, New suzuki samurai spring bushings pressed in, I learned I still hate hole saws with a passion and got it basically rolling. I notched the frame with the plasma cutter for the rear upper shackle mounts. I am using a set off ubolts for shackles till I order or build some. I need to fix some gouges on one side from the hole saw but I wont show that!
Image
All the upper portions and sides are welded. I am waiting for several other things, stabilizers, holes notches through crossmembers for water lines and other stuff then I will flip the chassis over and weld the under side for clean welds. Hopefully wed I have a better update.
