New Build...first attempt.

Postby Rick Chiddy » Wed Aug 01, 2012 8:57 pm

Ok folks,

I guess I can say that I have finally, officially, started my first Teardrop. :D Been working on the trailer...dis-assembly, wire wheel, paint and so forth. It was a boat trailer at one time, I rescued it from a friend's yard for nothing. Cheap works real good for me. It has small wheels right now, but I think I will try them for a bit. Don't see myself going more than 3 hours in any direction for the near future.

My initial plan is to go with a Generic Benroy style for simplicity...4x8 should be plenty as I will be the only one in it. A 7 foot floor will be big enough for my 6 FT. 2 IN. There will not be much in the galley as I like to K.I.S.S.

Thinking about naming it the "Minimalist" This way, I can use all the back-packing gear that has been gathering dust.

This may be a spread out build, depending on how much funding $> I can squeeze out of the "Boss" every week.

So, all for now...I will post some pics when there is something interesting to see. :pictures:

Excellent!

Make your build a journey and enjoy your way. Due to lack of money, time, and sometimes motovation, my build took 3 years. I'm glad I undertook building a teardrop. It is almost as fun as camping.

Of course, we need pics as soon as there is sawdust.

Oh, I will definitely enjoy it. I've built two kayaks, and loved it. Hopefully mine won't take three years, but, hey...ye never know.

Does rust dust count ? I've been working in the evenings because of the hot weather lately. And, you can only do that so late, even out here in the sticks.

Later,

All pics count, bring them on! Progress is progress and it all has to get done so it doesn't really matter what part you are working on. It is all good. Besides, the sooner we can see what you are working on, the sooner we can start "helping". :D

Ah, well ok,

I'll do me best to get some posted. Might be a couple of days, :NC a buddy of mine is "moving" this week end, so I'll be tied up Saturday. If I survive that, maybe I'll post some Sunday.

Well, try as I might, I cannot get any pics to upload. :x Mine are too big by a longshot and I do not know how to reduce them. :?

Mayhap my teen-ager can help me. :worship:

Anyway, I have started taking my frame apart and cleaning it up with a wire wheel. So far, I've got the fenders done and painted...came out pretty nice. I used Rust-oleum Rust Reformer on them. I have a Quart of POR 15 that I will use on the rest of the frame.

This heat and humidity are really getting the best of me. :sweaty: It sucks getting old. :disappointed:

I think it's time for an Ale...

G'nite.

Well,

Ok then, Thanks Toypusher. Those are my fenders after cleaning up and painting. I think they turned out pretty nice. Haven't decided on a color yet.

I've finally been making some decent progress, got most of the frame cleaned up and ready for paint. Surprisingly, everything came apart with relative ease. Kinda shocked me due to it's age and the fact that it sits out in the weather.

Ok. I found a way to set my camera for smaller pics...let's see if this works. HHMMmm...guess it would help to create a Gallery.

Aw cripes...can't even do that right.

Anyway, work is in motion...no sawdust yet, but, ye gotta have something to put a trailer on...so, frame first..

Later,

"they" tell me once you figure out how to post pictures it's easy I really haven't tried because I don't have any pictures to post.

one of the things I like to do is notice where people are located the finger lakes region of new york is one place I would
like to revisit and spend more time it has been 20 years or so since I've been there.

oh yea welcome and good luck on your build.

I tried that Toy, but, it told me the file was too big ! I got the camera set to 160 x 280 or something like that...but that didn't help either. ACK. I'll figger it out sooner or later. 2015 maybe. My next attempt might be Photobucket or some other whatever.

Anywho, I found some u-bolts that are exact fit replacements, so I'm happy bout that.Finished up wire wheeling and started painting the frame today. This evening I went to the Big Box and bought me some plywood and lumber. I can hear the saw blade calling my name.

I'm hoping this week-end will see the trailer completed,( meaning reassembled and sitting on tires.) Then I can start the fun part.

All for now,

Rick

And Pete, thanks for the welcome. I love it here in the Finger Lakes. New York has some of the best scenery in the country. I've got a good size yard if ye ever want to use it as a Base Camp, and wander the area. And that goes for ANYONE ! We ARE coming into Fall Foliage season. (just sayin')

All for now,

Rick

Oh! By the By, I got new bearings and seals for the hubs too. So for now, I'm gonna stick with the small tires. Maybe next year I'll upgrade and use the little ones for something else.
