1947 Kit Restoration

Postby M C Toyer » Fri Aug 10, 2012 6:44 pm

I looked at this a week ago but passed because of the very rough condition. Seller dropped the price to about the cost of the welded frame, Northern Tool axle, and Honda wheels and tires so I went back today to get it. The Harbor Freight tongue was from another trailer and is welded on.

The only thing that is original is the aluminum skin. I removed the right side for towing home because it was loose. It measures 4' wide x 8' long x 4' high. The plywood floor and walls were replaced some time ago but have significant weathering due to the outside never being sealed. There is a hatch but but no hinge and it is screwed down. I can see the bulkhead of the galley from the sleep compartment but not if it contains shelves or cabinets.

I'll probably do a very basic rebuild and paint the aluminum so I can tow with my Kia Sportage. It will have too wait a week or so until I complete the 20 x 40 carport seen upper right in the center photo and top of the last photo.

Does anyone have any thoughts about the painted graphic at the front of the sidewall? It is a blue swirl. The lighting bolt behind the door is less faded so possibly a later addition. The lettering is definitely later and repeated on the inside along with some heavy metal themed graphics. Those may have been on the outside at one time.

The California license plate is 1956.

Found these online, the first id'ed as 1947 Kit Kamper: same graphics, swirl continues along base and over fender. The roof skin on mine has been reversed and the v-shape graphic seen here is also present on the inside but has been altered.

Looks like you have a nice project there! I couldn't see the swirl until you found the other photos then when I went back up I could see it. I'm no historian but I like the style!
