Mikes kuffel creek comet build

Postby Mikeestep » Tue Aug 21, 2012 12:16 pm

I thought this would be an appropriate time to start a build thread. For those who don't know my story, here it is. I had been browsing here last year and made the decision to become a member. When I was younger(12-13) a family friend had brought up his tear drop while we were camping around (2003-2004) and I fell in love. I had looked and decided it would be best if I built my own. I have some wood working experience and metal fabrication experience. November last year I came across someone who was unable to finish their project and I fell in love with it now comes the problem. The trailer was in Tennessee and I'm in California. You know the saying, if there's a will there is a way? Well there was a will, now just had to figure out the way. My aunt told me she would drive from Missouri and pick it up and store it till I was able to pick it up. The trailer came with a stove oven combination unit and all the plans needed to finish it. Fast forward to today, I'm in new Mexico heading back to California, with the trailer. I have towed it nearly 750 miles and I think I have had a smile on my face the whole time. Im excited to finish it and have tons of questions for you folks with more experience than myself.

The roof is pretty wavy from sitting I believe. I'm super excited to be able to use it. I will be skinning the trailer in aluminum. So should I replace the current roof before skinning it or will it be okay?

Here's the stove oven

It looks doable :)

Take your time and make a list of what is need to complete. There is a lot of good ideal gold in these pages.

Mike,
did you get the Kuffle Creek plans with the trailer? The reason I ask, is they are pretty good plans for a first time builder and you might consider getting the plans if you don't have them. I think they would really help you progress smoothly with you build.

Mike nice buy and glad you finally got it!! If its been setting outside for a while with no doors check inside where the walls meet the floor and check for staining. If roof skins are wavy and look like they have water damage I would go ahead and replace and reskin with new and seal them. I would hate for you to get it finished and then find you have to tear apart and redo to rotten wood. I picked up a small tear of CL that looked good but since have found place where wood is rotting and will tear it apart this winter to make a smal tear for lite travel. Well good luck and take lots of pics if you resize to 800x600 small setting it will allow you to post with out having to scroll the pics around. Good luck and welcome to the forum!

Cliff
