4x8 Generic Benroy in Washington Paint almost done

Postby volvoman62 » Fri Aug 24, 2012 12:11 pm

Hi, I am late to the game posting pictures and updates to my build. I am building a 4x8 benroy. I have been working for a couple weeks and want to post some pictures of how its going.

This is me laying out the pattern to cut the side wall. At this point I have already built the trailer which was a 4x8 from Bi Mart, I went with it because it was black instead of the normal red. I also built the floor and by built I mean over built I used 2x4's and 3/4 inch plywood.
Image

Here is the sidewall all cut and just set on the trailer to get a look.
Image

Both walls cut out and sanded to match temporarily attached to the trailer to get an even better look.
Image

The start of the galley cabinets. The kreg jig is awesome and makes some really strong joints. With the glue im sure the wood will fail first.
Image

Here is the galley in with one side wall up and permanently attached lots of gorila glue and stainless screws.
Image

The top cabinet face for the galley held in place.
Image

The cabinet face for the cabin held in place
Image

Testing out the length. It may be a little small but I never sleep on my back or with shoes on so I should be fine.
Image

Second wall up and permanently attached.
Image

Picture of the galley with both walls up and all cabinet faces in place.
Image

Cabinet doors cut but not assembled yet.
Image
Image

I have stained the doors and faces with the minwax polyshades but it turned out horrible. So I think we are going to end up painting them. I have also hung the cabinet doors no pictures of that yet, as well as installed a sink that will be a lift out to dump. The sink is just a 1/4 pan chafing dish I got at the local restaurant supply store only 12 bucks.

Your teardrop looks fantastic!

You don't fool around. The progress you showed in your first post took me about 2 years to complete.

Very nice! :applause:  :applause:

Looking good, so far. The fit looks a bit tight. I'm struggling with this same thing right now. I'm not sure where to put my 'back wall' or 'foot board'. I sleep on my stomach and usually pretty much as straight as an arrow. At 5'10"- I think I'll be okay with a 6'6" 'bed'. My wife is a svelt 5'5", so no worries there.

Keep up the good work.

The white fender / headlight / grill, just off scene - Volvo? or Morris?

Wow good eye its a 62 pv544 volvo its my first car and still have it 14 years later. It is a little tight but keeping it easy with a 4x8 build there isen't a lot of room to play with. The lower cabinet is only 12 inches deep so not a ton of room and definitely not enough for a cooler. Hope fully it will be long enough cant really do to much now :D

62 pv544!

I can't think of a better tow vehicle. That's really cool.

There are a few things you can do here:
1) You could make that lower cabinet just big enough to store an ez-up and put the cooler in the Tow Vehicle. :)
2) Make it larger when you build your second one.

Since everything is glued and screwed in im going to go with option 2. We are going to see how we like having a teardrop and then sell this one and probably build a 5x10.

Hey there , just started reading your build thread this evening. It looks great! I laughed when I saw this photo. It reminded me of one I took of my husband during the same stage of our build:

Good job on the Benroy so far.

My used Camper has a 5’10” sleeping area. I’m 5’6” . I will be building a 5’x 9' or 5'x10' later on after
I use this one for a year or two.

I have read through quite a few build threads so far and i have seen that “ let see if I fit picture ”.
We can start a new Net Fad like Planking, Owling, or Tebowing.

We’ll call it TD-Sizing.

Got some more pictures

Galley and the cabinet doors hung.
Image

I went over kill on the spars I think but I'm not going for super light and being my first build 1/8th inch plywood dosent seem strong enough but I'm sure I'll see after this build.
Image

Fantastic fan test fit, and more spars.
Image

Headliner installed, I think this is the hardest part. I ended up putting screws in too, dosent look great but its not bad. I used stuff called thrifty board just interior paneling with a smooth white finish looks nice and will brighten up the inside.
Image

Another shot of the headliner and fantastic fan mount. I did have one screw go through the headliner but its right about where I would mount a dome light anyways so I lucked out there.
Image

Inside all done, it was really hot out.

No new pictures. But I did just get my 1/8th Baltic birch in. The lumber yard in my town had no idea what 5x5 baltic birch was and said they couldn't even order it. So I called the cabinet shop in town and they ordered it for me. It was a little pricey at $27 a sheet but it was the only place i could get it without driving to far. Now to get wiring done so I can put the roof on. Also I want to finish the trailer with paint. what do I need to do to the trailer before paint, and what kind of paint do I use. I will also finish with aluminium trim after the paint too.

Re: 4x8 Generic Benroy in Washington Update roof and hatch

Postby volvoman62 » Sat Sep 15, 2012 5:13 pm

Got a lot done today.

Here is the paper bag flooring that we put in.
Image

Here are the porch lights installed as well as the dome light on the inside.
Image

The beginning of the insulation getting installed.
Image

I had leftover butcher block countertop from redoing my kitchen so here is the counter with the sink cutout.
Image

Here is the hatch frame built. Cutting out all those curves with the jig saw was a pain.
Image

The hatch skinned and glued.
Image

The hatch on the trailer. It fit so that is good. Have to buy a laminate trim bit so I can trim all the edges.
Image

The roof on and glued just needs to be trimmed.
