Victoria woodie build

Postby derekja » Tue Aug 28, 2012 7:00 pm

At this point I've got a bunch of ideas floating around. And a bare trailer. Just thought I'd put some of them down here as I cogitate on them.

I'm out of town for a week (trip up north to Powell River, I wish I had my trailer done already!)

The trailer is 55" by 96" with 15" tires on a torsion axle. The axle has a raised 1 and a quarter inch section on the frame that I'll have to figure out something to do with as I build the floor.

I have a whole bunch of cedar in the shed, so I intend to cedar strip the roof anyway. Probably the walls as well, but still vacillating on that a bit after reading Steve's construction manual.

A couple interesting things I'm pondering:

1) it would be kind of neat to do a bowed roof. Give a bit more room in the center and it would look cool. I couldn't do it if I was roofing with sheet goods, but with strips I should be able to just fine. This might mean I need to cover the inside with fabric or something, though, and it would complicate insulation.

2) 55" is an awkward size. I need to scarf together plywood for the floors, but it's not quite big enough to fit the full size bed that I would love to put in there. The tires come up about 6 inches above the frame. This is tall, but not so tall that I couldn't build out 9 inches on either side to give me a full 6' width, into which I could clearly fit the full sized bed. I could potentially do something interesting in that space for storage as well.

Anyone have thoughts on either of these crazy ideas?

I'm doing this work at a shared workspace I help run called makerspace.ca. I've mostly been getting the woodshop in order this week and have a new kreg jig to play with! If you're ever in the area come visit!

Only workshop videos and such up there right now, but as construction progresses updates will be on my youtube channel at http://www.youtube.com/user/derekja02

Thanks!

Those sound like good ideas. The crowned top would help shed water. The real challenge with that will be dealing with a galley hatch, if there is one. For the frame irregularities, look at Zach's X-II build viewtopic.php?f=50&t=46135 . While he used a standard frame, some of his design elements required framing methods that could be helpful in your situation.
