TSH's teardrop.

Postby TSH » Fri Aug 31, 2012 9:12 am

Hi.
My teardrop is almost done, but some of you wanted pictures from my build.
So, here we go. :)

This was my starting point, the frame donor. An old caravan from 1976. In Norway it's not allowed to make your own frame :x , so I had to use an already registered caravan frame.
Image
Image

Frame shortened and new attachment points for cabin welded in place.
Image

Sub frame taking shape. 30mm x 70mm.
Image

Battery compartment in aft section.
Image

Floor was made of waterproof plywood, same type they use on trailers. The forward compartment are for camping furniture.
Image

Frame returned from sand blasting and sink coating. :D
Image

Attachment of sub frame and floor.
Image
Image

Walls made, my cabin is 3 meter.
Image
Test fit of door and window.
Image
Image

Reinforcement on the edges and for door and window glued.
Image
Markings for the "stiffeners", roof attachment.
Image
Image
Image
Image

Flooring, with forward compartment hatch installed.
Image
Image

Upper part of wall.

Wall + skirt. Makes it look low. 8)

Fenders. Think that was the biggest challenge. Wanted them in aluminum, so had to figure out shape and size.
Started with thin wood sheets.
Image

Template done.
Image

Then it was just to make them in aluminum, NOT. It went a lot of hrs in fabrication of them. In addition, I had to learn how to Tig weld aluminum.
Made a thick wood form for forming the alu. sides. To get the right form I used a shrinker / stretcher machine and hammer.

Man that is nice work you are doing ( or have already completed ) . I see the line from the seam for the
side of the camper. That must be where the skirt starts. The skirt gives the shape of the camper a nice apperance.

Thomas:

I like the low boy look and the nice shape in your fenders. The combination sets the whole profile up very nicely. You have a designers eye.

Is that a plasma cutter in the one picture? Did you do the work on that awsome tow vehicle as well?

Thanks for posting,

Martin

I believe that is a pneumatic nibbler. A rapidly reciprocating hole punch.

Hi Martin.

The tool you see on one of the photos are an air nibbler. It has a small piston that cuts out metal. Cheap and useful.
The car, 1931 Ford model A, is also built by me. Body is original, but the frame and drive line are modified. Chevy 350 engine, TH 350 transmission, Jaguar rear axle and
Mustang 2 front end.

Fantastic trailer and tow car !

What is the gray material on the interior? It looks great with the black and white cabinet.

Hi M C.

The interior walls and roof are 4mm plywood with grey house paint. One coat, sanded smooth and 2 more coats. Nothing fancy here, keep it simple.
