Yet another build

Postby dotsun » Fri Oct 05, 2012 5:35 am

I got long winded in my newbie intro thread about my build, so I thought it was time to move over here. So far I have most of it framed in. I hope to build my door and hatch this weekend. Here's a pic of the wreck so far:

The plan is to fiberglass the top and seams with cloth and epoxy, simply epoxy the walls to smooth and protect the plywood, then paint it.

A door and a hatch both in one weekend. I am impressed.

But man, I need to figure out why I am so freakin' slow. I have been working on my hatch for weeks.....

By the way, I looked at your blog. Love your tow vehicle!! (It's a Jeep thing...)

Haha, thanks. I love my Jeep. I'm thinking I shouldn't have a problem building both in a weekend as I did most of the previous build in one weekend. Cross fingers. lol

Well I started with the epoxy tonight. I got most of the roof done and applied some fiberglass cloth on the edges. I kinda gave up on using the cloth on the sides as it just kept falling off on me. Any pointers on that? If I can't get it I'll probably caulk the gap on the edge where the wall meets the floor.

Man that is one big hatch hold up stick thingy.

Most of the build threads I have read through where people applied fiberglass cloth, they applied it to the sides while laying flat.

More people just use West System Epoxy. http://www.westsystem.com/ss/ and just apply a few layers with a few day inbewteen for drying.

Yeah the prop might be slightly overengineered. lol Unfortunately, the crack between the floor and the wall only manifests itself once the wall is installed so I'm kinda stuck with a vertical application. I went with Aeromarine Epoxy which I would imagine is pretty similar to the West system. I may try again tonight and see how it goes with the cloth.

Well the epoxy and fiberglass is finished. I'm gonna caulk the crack where the wall meets the floor on the outside. In other news I think I got a bad/old batch of hardener for the bondo I bought. It came out of the tube watery. :( I'll check on that when I get back from my test later today. If it hardens I'll be sanding again then throwing a coat of primer on.

Instructions on the tube of hardener say to knead it before use.

On areas where gravity is against me laying p fiberglass, I use 3m Super 77 to glue the cloth before applying the resin. It has been a life saver for me.

I bought them both from a guy that was parting out his motor home.

That's a great idea, wish I'd thought of it.
