Building a teardrop to to behind a motorcycle

Postby Red Rider » Mon Nov 26, 2012 11:53 pm

Great, another new guy. I am working on a trailer to tow behind my motorcycle. This is my first build and I have been reviewing this blog for some time trying to get ideas. You guys are a great inspiration for the DIY person. Here are some pics of my progress.

Red Rider, I too am in the midst of building a Tear to tow with my motorcycle. I used the 40" x 48" HF trailer as well.

Here's is a ink to my build:

Good luck with your build.

RedRider, have you calculated the estimated tongue weight of your build? I've read on several MC forums that a tongue weight of 10 to 15% of the total trailer weight is recommended. Also, I am extended the tongue on my build. I bought a $10.00 fish scale and my tongue weight so far is 30lbs..

I haven't weighed the tongue yet but I actually had to move the wheels back some because it would actually do a wheelie. Almost launched my 11 year old. LOL.

I used a combination of FRP glue (very expensive $25 per gallon and only needed less than a cup) and aluminum strips. Unfortunately the glue doesn't come in tubes and it is not recommended to use other glues. I am not sure why though. The aluminum I used looks like it could go into a door threshold but I don't know what it is called. I got it at Menard's for about $5 for a 10 foot section. It almost looks like a pro did it. Almost. I will try to upload a pic of the material.
