Kit rebuild...kind a

Postby prohandyman » Fri Nov 30, 2012 5:03 am

Drug another Kit home yesterday. What a POS... junk frame, skins gone, wood was replaced with particle board some time in the past, axle froze up ( it has been laying in the dirt or awhile). Did have the stove, horizontal propane bottle, ice box, one door. Actually went for the stove and bottle-should have just left the rest but the owner needed it gone. But...it was FREE! Great prospect for the axle I got from Len (Thanks Len). We'll weld up a new frame for it. When I said drug it home...almost did! Had to hook a chain to it and drag it out of the dirt. It actually had a car engine laying in it when first looked. A least they had a tarp over it...didn't want the particle board to get wet!!! :? Maybe a camper will rise from the ashes! Let me think ...where is the landfill again?

Well good find on at least the tanks, stove and ice box.

So what exactly classifies them as a Kit. What company produced them.

Alot of people get this confused, thinking they are made from a kit. Kit mfg was the company that made them. 1946-1948, at least for the teardrops. They did make them as kit form in 1945, thus the name Kit Mfg., but sales were very poor. In 1946 they made completed campers but kept the Kit name. That we're all 4x8, same profile, tube tongue, twin torsion tube axles, fiberglass fenders on most 1947-48 models, metal tag on tongue, black and white label on the inside of curb door. Some were the basic model, and some were "Sportsmasters", a deluxe model with aluminum clad galley, ice box, stove and bottle. After 1948 the teardrop line was dropped in favor of larger model campers, and were in business until about 1991 still using the Kit name.

Man, some guys have all the luck. An original Kit, for free. I had to pay 250 for my 55 Benroy, and it was in about the same shape.

I can't wait to see this one come together.
