My Budget Build Teardrop.

Postby MoCreations » Thu Dec 13, 2012 9:09 pm

My uncle had a pop up camper sitting at the shop, he said that mice had gotten inside and chewed up the canvas.

Ended up working out a pretty sweet deal. Did a few hours of weed eating for it.

I've been wanting to build a tear drop for the longest time... this will provide a good starting point.

I salvaged a few parts from the pop up before ripping it apart. I saved the sink, tank, and the pump. Also saved some of the cushions, the bed, a folding table, and the gas stove... Oh, and the trailer portion.

A 4wd and chain make quick of the demolition, here's what I started with, and where I am now.

Tomorrow I plan on removing the rest of the floor, and cutting off the over hanging sides... which will leave the trailer roughly 5' wide and 8' long. Over the weekend I'm going to brushing some rustoleum on the frame, and maybe putting on a new floor...

Plan on building your basic tear drop, with a little kitchen area in the back. I'm unsure of some of design names and proper tntt terms, so you'll have to work with me.

Which profile are you going with and what is your overall plan?

You could always leave the trailer sides as 'full length fenders' of sorts and just add a fender over the tires. It would give you a great place for general off the ground storage (shoes, water, lanterns, etc). Only works on the looks if your doing a bit more of an off-road build but could be as simple as adding some expanded steel over the exposed framing in front of and behind the wheels.

You mentioned 4x4 and a chain so I thought it might be appropriate.

As an example, see the side platforms added before and after the fenders on this one: http://images.gizmag.com/gallery_lrg/moby1-2.jpg

Might want to just cut in right at the doors for easier access.

Here's a much better visual of what I was trying to explain:

Well, I started lurking around the cargo conversion section and fell in love, and so did my wife. I think I'm going to cancel this build (actually, guess I'm going to make it into a utility trailer) and start looking for a good deal on a 7x14 or so....
