tangerine dreamer again

Postby Vindi_andy » Sun Jan 13, 2013 7:39 am

Well after moving house and 3 years of not doing anything we have managed to get to a point where the build can begin again.

A couple of hours sorting we managed to get to a point where we have enough space in the garage to get the profiles on to a work table which will comprise 4 saw horses and the 18 mm ply which will make up the deck.

This will enable us to make the side profiles in the dry then fit them when it's dry outside.

The TV will need to go away to have a toward fitted as it's unique so while she's away will have the whole garage to play with.

Pictures will follow.

How bad is this.

Actual construction hasnt even restarted and already Im considering no. 2

I am a little concerned regarding weight given I have a very light weight car, no shortage of power I just dont want the tail to wag the dog.

Im considering it that much that I have contacted a company that makes large styrofoam sheets and just out of interest asked the to quote for machining the sides for me. For both profiles for a Grumman 2 10', machined with door and wheel arch cutouts done £50, which I didnt think was too bad.

Can't get much for a hundred bucks here, so that is a good deal. What kind of profile are you going for? That was one of my favorite part of my builds.

It's basically a Grumman 2 as per the one in the design library. My wife and I are not what you would call small, I'm 6'4" and 16 plus stone my wife is curvy to put it politely incase she ever reads this, so we need a big bed and the Grumman profile just gives a bit more space. I have a 3 way fridge and sink burner combined unit that was salvaged when we stripped the rotten caravan down which gave us the chassis unfortunately a lot of the timber was rotten or had delaminated so not a lot else could be salvaged.

Am going to have to concentrate on this one first to git er done and then see what she weighs then think about whether I need to go lighter. Having said that fibreglass over foam would be right at home at the Kitcar shows as most of them are fibreglass.

Looks like my reply didnt post from my tablet.

Yes its a Vindicator Sprint Family a 4 seat LSIS. Was told by the boss I couldnt have a kitcar unless it had 4 seats, when we started the kids were 4 and 6. didnt want a bland sportscar or old roadster style. fortunately Vindicator came up with the Family version.

Link to build diary of TV if your interested.

Back on thread Construction has resumed on Tangerine dreamer over the weekend. Got the ply for the floor which has been placed across 4 folding saw horses to make a work table and have started glueing the fillets around the edge of on profile to give me the space for the styrofoam insulation. Could only do a few at a time as I ran out of clamps. Will do some more tonight.

OK so there has bee a small amount of progress and also time for a shameful admission as to why there are no pictures

Window hole cut in outer panel and stick frame and outer blocking glued in place. Running a profile following router bit round the edge to clean up the blocking.

Go to say Im a bit ashamed hence why I havent been posting pic. While the build was laid up one of the outer walls was left outside under a Tarp and got damp. Suffice it to say we had a little bit of mold develop. When we moved, all the ply came into the garage and had a chance to dry out. Having read a post on this forum we have washed it over with bleach to kill the mould and I gave it a light going over with the belt sander, whilst wearing a mask, to clean things up a bit.

All nice and dry now but covered in black spots hence no pics.

Not too concerned about the appearance as it will be covered in a couple of layers of glass cloth the a layer of orange topcoat resin.

Having read other posts on the forum where people have used FG I think Im going to have to radius the top edge so the glass cloth will wrap around better

How about the a real Tangerine Dreamer. The Photo artwork by artist Pierre Beteille.

His Flicker Photostream.

Tangerine Dream

I actually went looking for an old Tangerine Dream tie-die album cover I remember seeing in my Dad’s record
collection when I found this picture.

Well I did have the idea of using the tailgate struts I took off the estate car that was the donor vehicle fo my kitcar build but after reading carters woes I thought i needed to test the weight rating on them.

Using a very unscientific method i put them on the floor and leant on them. They needed nearly all my weight on them to make them move now im not saying im overweight but I am over the 100 KG (200 lb) mark so I think these may be a tad too strong for my hatch.

Thanks.

Unfortunately the resolution isnt gret so when I started blowing it up to print to stick on the tear it started to pixellate.

Fortunately I work with a graphic designer who has agreed to look at doing soemthing suitable to print A4 size.

OK so had a fairly productive weekend.

Got the rest of the insulation cut for the drivers side wall then glued it up and used my brad nailer to go round the edges to hold it as these will be hidden by the inner roof and some internal storage. Was playing around making a tongue box and made a miscalculation fortunately I have more off cuts to play with.

Tried the profile on the trailer just to have a look see. The floor needs replacing but It looks good. Posting this from work so pics to follow when I get home.

The door I ordered arrived and looks good if a little skinny, but you live and learn. We will just have to live with it.

Drew the door opening out on the passenger side profile and I think thats all folks for this weekend.

Ok so small steps and all that.

Got the drivers side profile completed and all stuck together now.

Working on the passenger side now. Got all the framing round the curve cut and glued on most of it trimmed to shape. Cut out and framed the wheel arch. Cut out the door hole (scary moment big hole in relatively expensive panel) Door fits a treat. and stuck the first piece of framing around the door hole.

Getting there slowly.
