1946 Kit rebuild

Postby prohandyman » Fri Feb 01, 2013 2:42 pm

Well taking a break from the Whetzeldorfs and finally getting Kit under way. Wasn't much left of it...frame was trash, repl. axle, sides were salvageable, but decided to just, replace. The PO had tore all the aluminum and wood down and was using it to stack wood on, but kept all the parts off to the side. Some wood good, as is the windows, ice box, door hardware, etc. Here is the plan...new wood where needed, going to stick with the one door as we're all 46's, re-work the ice box, sand and shellac the wood, paint over the now painted aluminum...maybe to match my '48 Chevy truck, have a stove and bottle from a '47, so I may do the galley in all aluminum like the Sportsmasters, re-install the water tank, re-wire and install the original lights, hitch was bent so welded on a newer model Fulton hitch, have a pair of 35 Ford wire wheels at the powder coaters, thinking white wall tires, have the original flat fenders found on some 46's, but may order a pair of the newer style fiberglass fenders as found on the later ones. So a hodge podge of parts. ID tag has 12-23 of 1946 so it must have been the last one off the line before Christmas101810101811

Here is the center mount light that was on it. I re-wired it for an 1157 bulb, but may add some other taillights as well. Wire wheels before taking to powder coaters.

Dan...you can also get the older style glass fenders with the outer flange on them as well. I'm sure you'll turn out a great little trailer....Doug

Yes it does appear so . Don't know quite what to make of the axle changes though.
Doug...yes I bought a pair of those fenders a year or two ago.
Cliff...yes it will be done in a few weeks. Have every thing but fenders and tires.

Got the body set down on the frame, the ceiling on, mattress and interior lights in, the counter top on, and started gluing the aluminum back in the galley.

Looks great Dan! Is that quilted aluminum on the back splash an original or did you get that bent up? Did you also have to do any work on the liner on the ice box? Doug

Not original just thought it would look nice since I am not actually restoring this unit. Ad yes the ice box was in bad shape so had a local sheet metal company make me a copy.

The galley is a thing of beauty! I wish I had gone that route with my benroy. Love all of the aluminum!

Keep at it!

Got some of the faux rivet work done today. Aluminum twist nails, driven in very tightly with silicone sealant. May add another row or two.
