getting stuff ready for my build,

Postby conn.rod » Thu Feb 21, 2013 8:05 pm

I have my HF trailer, question is,will this method work for building the outside.I am going to build the traditional walls, but thinking of using fiberglass for the outside instead of wood.Anyone with fiberglass experiance please chime in.

I was also considering the use of fiberglass for the outside instead of aluminium. I does seem like a lot more work. Is fiberglass lighter that the aluminium would be? I'll be interested to hear what people have to say! Good Luck, I'll watch!
Ha! Just saw the post on the "Simple Maryland 5 wide" build in this forum! He coated his trailer with fiberglass. Hummmmm, food for thought!

Check out Becky's Sagwagon. She starts laying the fiberglass onto the floor assembly in her build thread here. Further down she does the walls and uses a boat paint to finish.

Her style is fun to read, too.

Fiberglass is a lot more work, I stress a lot. I am currently working on the "simple 5 wide in Maryland" and I believe the exterior would be done by now if I would have done the traditional aluminum covering. Would I do it again? Probably but ask me after I have all the sanding done. The reason I went with fiberglass is to keep the weather out. Prior to beginning this build I had looked at several used small RVs and the reoccurring theme was water damage. This influenced my choice of no roof vent or galley hatch. I have a small workshop (12x16) and I will not have the means to store it inside. It will brave the elements 365 days a year. The last thing I need is something else to "maintain" and have found that over the years "simple is easy". When I want to use the teardrop I want to be able to hitch it up and go with little prep and when I'm done I would like to unhitch it and have little to do for storage.
