Climbing Carpenter 4'10"x10' woody build.

Postby ClimbingCarpenter » Mon Mar 11, 2013 9:10 am

So, I found an old utility trailer on kijiji for sale and picked it up on the weekend. I have decided to build a woody because I am a cabinet maker and have a great love for all things wood. The size of the trailer is larger than most but I am six foot four inches tall and figured that if I am making the move from my tent to a trailer I may as well be as comfortable as possible.

I have been doing glue ups for a work related project this morning and while the glue dried I pulled the plywood and timber box off the trailer chassis.

Make it whatever size you need. That is the beauty about the teardrop. Just enjoy yourself and

So, I have decided to go with baltic birch as the skin on my teardrop. I have found an excellent exterior grade sprayable poly that has great uv blocking properties. I have also decided to stain the birch prior to spraying the clear coat. Here is a sample of the the wood with stain and two coats of poly. (plan on doing four and then buffing with auto body wax) The piece of birch I used for the sample was a chunk of scrap that had been kicking around my shop and was scratched and dented so the appearance is not the best.

A very exciting afternoon. My materials were delivered. Looks like I am going to have to take a therma rest and a sleeping bag to the shop. Between work and this project I might as well move in. :D

I had nothing lined up for work this morning so I put the floor for my teardrop together.

First full day of spring and I managed to get the layout done for the walls of my trailer in an hour this morning.

A project I was scheduled to do today fell through do to materials not arriving because of the storm here in alberta yesterday so I made my way out to my shop and started in on my trailer at six this morning. Here is what I have accomplished so far today.

I did not get much accomplished this weekend other than making the ribs/spars for the galley hatch, however I did find a place locally that can get me a hurricane hinge and signal and marker lights.

Couldn't stay away from the build today, picked up some polystyrene insulation and insulated and skinned the ceiling of the sleeping quarters. I am waiting on the arrival of the missing sheets of baltic birch to complete the hatch and the interior walls of the sleeping quarters. Hopefully it will be delivered on wed. I also picked up some led light strips from homedepot they are 12 volt i will be doing a simple modification on them to run them off a 12v battery. Another couple of weeks and I should have this beast ready for camping in early april.
