Modified Wanderer 10

Postby bsautry » Thu May 09, 2013 12:16 am

Build start: I m posting here to make sure my ideas/plans may actually work. I will listen to all ideas and advice, but please do not get bent out of shape if I do not choose to use yours.

Intro:
I am building a teardrop trailer because I am “thrifty” and cannot find anything prefab that I like or want to spend my money on. After sleeping in a tent all weekend at a Cub Scout event and then tent camping the next weekend at the Grand Canyon NP and Joshua Tree NP the wife finally has agreed that we need some type of trailer. To get her to agree to this concept, a lot of research had to be done on the prefab trailers. She has now finally agreed.

Requirements:
The trailer must be lighter then 2,000 lbs the towing capacity of her Jeep Patriot (my JKU has 3500lb towing capacity, for just in case). Must have room for 2 adults and 1 child (child in separate tent not option/ tried), plus two dogs. It must have a sink for washing hands, face and/or teeth. The color and finish of the trailer is not an issue for her.

Results:
We are taking the Wanderer 10, in the design library, and morphing two designs together. We are taking the layout A1 and combining it with layout B. There will not be a galley or toilet internal to the trailer. If weight allows, we will install a small pullout / chuck box. The bed in layout B will not be a table, but a couch in the daytime and a bed in the evenings. Not sure if we are going to make the bed the same width as the design or shrink it down to fit a Therm-a-rest mattress that we already have. This will give us more floor space. There will not be a dropped floor. This is to increase ease of build and offset a small amount of weight. This may change after the build, as most things tend to do. The sides will be built to specifications within the designs accept for the skin. I am choosing (after many debates) to skin the outside and inside with 1/8” plywood and foam board sandwich in between. My team believes this will be strong enough to do what we want. A rock guard (aluminum skin ) maybe applied to the lower area for increase durability. For cost and added strength the floor will be ¼” plywood sheet doubled but overlapped at the joints. The total depth of the floor will still be ½”.

Team:
Wife, will help with the build, approve all final decisions and pick final colors.

Son will help where and when he can, 8 yo , and has already given his input multiple times about having a tv for the gaming systems. This has been vetoed by the parents.

Maddie, eldest dog , will approve final bed comfort. She is the princess of the bunch.

Jessie, youngest dog, will verify I am still moving in the desert heat. She has already proven that she can perform watches and checks all progress on the trailer. She gives updates to Maddie, who then comes out of the air conditioned house for final verification.

Technical support is coming from you all on the forum, an avid wood worker (Dad), an engineer (CEC), two welders and my past CIO for connectivity issues and spare tools.

Experience: In the past several years I have modified a 2000 Montero Sport and then a 2010 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon JKU for off road exploration. Living in the desert gives me a lot of opportunities on the weekends. Last time I did wood work would have been 1997 when I built the furniture for our first apartment when we got married.

Already bought the trailer (HF 4x8 heavy duty), roof vent, shore power connector, and various other items. This weekend will buy the windows and maybe the wood. Everything will be bought (until I figured out that I either broke something or missed it) within the next two weeks.

Standing by for the intial rock throughing..... :NC

No rock throwing here. My teardrop "chubby" is 5'7" wide and 10' long is is very roomy for the two of us and the 2 dogs(both 28# terriers) . I do have one thought; kids do grow up ! Perhaps if you lowered the profile and reinforced the roof a bit more than usual a roof top tent could be added. The boy now has his own space and what kid doesn't love a "tree house" just ask him. This design change leaves you a bit of room for that outside galley.

I really love to cook and the flip out galley get a real work out on our rig.

I like your idea, but unfortunately it was already vetoed. The next design had a queen bed with a loft above with trolley car roof. Once the wife got a hold of these plans there was no turning back. She loves the idea of having a dinette inside the trailer. I guess taking her out camping in below freezing temperatures and with 25 mph sustained winds has really made her positive on what she wants.

As long as she is still willing to travel my "thrifty" way, I will try my best to get her what she desires.

BTW love your kitchen. That was one of my desires, and may be on my next build. Do you know if anyone has built a tear drop kitchen/cargo trailer on a 4x4 trailer? Would love it for Cub Scout camping.

I have a strange feeling that in a couple of years we will be either building another trailer or buy a bigger one. She is still getting push back from her side on why do we camp when we can stay in hotels. They just don't understand there is peace in such a simple life style.

Are you talking about a rear galley in a cargo? If so here are a couple pretty nice examples......

This made me think of the Kitchen Box on a trailer that we ordered from Mother Earth News. I don't know if they still sell the plans but I found the article here: http://www.motherearthnews.com/nature-a ... z2T0fkIbVI I would still like to build it sometime and the plans look fairly easy and really neat! We are still plan shopping for a trailer but I, too, like the Wanderer 10.

I love the fact that your going to build the wander 10. I would love to build one myself. We have a Kit type tear and its enough for now. Please post lots of photos and best of luck on your build.
I have had a question for sometime now and if you don't mind would like to throw it out now. If a person were to build a wander or the like. Could you use half inch ply for walls instead of stick and and 1/8 ply. Would half inch ply by its self be to clod at night or to heavy?
You may have thought about this already and I would love to hear your thoughts.
Again good luck on your build.

Dano, I am not sure if 1/2" ply is strong enbough at this height. The wieght would be approximately 3/4 of the stick and frame design.

Since this is the first trailer that I am building I will probably stick with the design, unless someone can prove to me that the 1/2" ply is strong enough. The current design is a sandwich desing between 3 different structures. This gives it increased strength and with a "thermal" layer increases cooling and heating.

I guess I'm gonna have to do some quick research, as I am planning on buying the wood this weekened. I was planning on doing it last weekend but swim team and Mothers Day were more important.

Not trying. To change your build. Just curious about half inch ply. I like what your doing and will follow the build. Thanks dano

Dano that is what i like about this site. everyone has a different idea that will work. If I reduce weight by 1/4, then it is worth looking into. Unfortunately, my resident engineer is preparing to deploy so he is out of touch to ask the questions. Will have tocontinue to think and research.

My Saturdays are taken up with swim team. So today we went to the wood store. I finally have something to make saw dust out of. :D

106792

My two inspectors had to come out and see things.
106794

Started making the front top and bottom curves.
106793

And elongated the trailer from 8ft to 9.5 ft.

This has been a very busy weekend. From swim meet on Saturday morning to a "dining out" on Saturday night I did not have much time to work on the trailer this week end. I did make progress. The weather has finally warmed up to an awesome 106 degrees.

I framed out the door opening. I place temporary bracing to keep it square until the glue fully set. I might keep them to offset the stress of the door opening and closing. What do yall think?

I looked throughout the site and throughout the internet, and did not find many examples. Most were made out of plywood, but this would be too heavy for this size door. The lateral supports are to house the door handle.

Next weekend I am going to make the floor and get it paint to install the sides. Thank you for looking.
