Hobbit Hole Build

Postby Sammit » Thu Jun 20, 2013 3:41 pm

Hello all! I'm partway through my modified teardrop build. I've been pretty busy up till now, so I'm finally posting a journal. I'll load up all the pictures I have so far, then try to update as I go from now on.
My trailer uses the 4x8 HFT base and is going to look like a hobbit hole.
I have some experience in the carpentry/painting side of things, but the cabinetry and electrical are going to be my learning opportunities this build!
I don't know the etiquette for this sort of thing, so I'm going to add each picture as a reply with text to keep things neat.

First, here's a general example of the inspiration for the build:

Starting out with the HFT kit. I was surprised how small the box was!

I debated moving the axle back, but I intend on having a woodpile and/or cooler on the tongue, so I figure the weight will nearly balance out.

I left a 3/4" ledge on the trailer to support the walls

First side wall up. I intended on making the profile more elliptical, but a plain half-circle worked best.

Holy heck, measurements worked the first time, walls are flush with trailer sides!
I opted for a 3/4" side wall because I don't need a lot of insulation, so I decided to screw instead of bolt in the wall. Eventually both walls will be bolted at least twice, and trim pieces will cover the screw heads.

Second side wall up. You can see the smaller round window in the front. I plan on making this work like a shutter with a permanent screen.

Framing is up for the roof and galley wall with 1x2", and a double 2x2" for the hatch.
Roof is also framed for my Fantastic Fan (pictured) and a window in front.

Filled out the galley wall, and built the hatch framing. It's currently clamped in to dry in the right shape.

The wife wanted the inside walls to look plastered/stucco-like, so I spent a couple hours with a putty knife and vinyl spackling.
