The Kira Build

Postby Photoman33770 » Wed Jul 03, 2013 1:47 pm

I have lurked on here for a long time and did do a few posts now and then for my 2 cents worth.
I was doing a project that I wanted to finish before starting a build. ( I was writing a novel ).
At last I took the plunge and got the 5x8 frame from Northern tools while it was on sale.
Both boxes had the corners torn open but nothing was missing... until I started putting it together. They had sent a bag of 8 lug nuts instead of a bag of ten. They already sent the extra two nuts and all is well. It only took a week for the paper work to show up.

Build will be slow with the Florida heat and humidity.

Before I started the build I needed a place to work. My garage is way too small as I will be building it out to 7 x 13.

Image

Garage built ( 10 x 17 from HF on sale plus a coupon ). The floor is black plastic on top of mulch. The ground the is low and I would be ankle deep in water if I didn't do that. It has rained over 8 inches since then and all is bone dry. I put 3 florescent fixtures in the roof and it is BRIGHT in there. I started the trailer. I put it together on top of sawhorses so I could save the bending over with my bad back. :frightened:

Only tricky part was the axle but it turned out pretty easy to do. Put a bracket on one side, just use the outer U bolt. Slide the axle in then put on the inside U bolt. Lift it in place and put on other side. I thought I would have to tie it up with rope but I didn't need to.

I hate dim lights on trailers due to poor ground and the brake lights would have poor ground so I ran a ground wire to each light and to the wiring harness.

I soldered ( tinned ) the end of the wire, then bent it in a hook shape and put it under the mounting bolt. ( The shiny spot on the right. )

The clearance light I put a terminal on the wire and put it under the mounting screw. Yes I had to drill an extra hole for the wire.

When I had to splice I did a solder job then heat shrink.

I made sure every thing was tight and the frame square then used wood under the jack and raised it a tiny bit to pull out the saw horses. lowered it on some stands then repeated the process till the nose was on the ground. Did the same for the rear... No Lifting which was great for my back.

I am now on a hold do to the rains the mosquitos are out in force. I will put on 1 sheet of 4x8 ply I have in the garage then make a run for lumber and materials. Before I can do that I have to take down the side gate to my yard and redo it as the trailer is too wide to go through it. It will be a week or two before much of any progress can be made. I did put a curtis hitch on the car but I still need to run the wiring but that is on hold for the rain.

I have no plans on paper, it is all in my head. I can't draw a straight line with a ruler so there was not much point. :( ( Yes I tried sketch-up ) I do have special plans for the wall skin and that will hold me up for a few weeks when I get to that point as it is complicated but I think it will be great.

It will have a Chef oven/stove ( on hand ) an air conditioner ( on hand ) a small freezer. ( gotta have Popsicles ) and a grill. All lights will end up being LED. Walls and floor will have insulation, floor will be bamboo.

That's it for now. :D

It would help if the rains would stop so I can get wood.
I hope the Weekend improves.

Nothing really to see but did get the post holes dug and the posts in. Tomorrow it should be all set and can move the fence to make it wide enough to move the trailer out of the back yard for a supply run tue or wed. Need some 3/4 play, 1/8 ply, 2x4, 4x4, and 1x4.

Hi Photo,

Ditto on the popsicles!!! :D Can't live in FL in the summer without them.

Interested in watching your build, just subscribeb. Would like to stop in when up your way. I'm in Sarasota Co. myself.

Good idea with the mulch and visqueen plastic. Almost my whole three acres is standing water, especially this week. Have even moned the horse to the next door neighbor's property. As for mosquitoes, put a piece of lanai screen across the front of the shelter and burn a citronella candle or two.

Isn't this rain somethin'? Wettest June/July I can ever remember. We had over 5 inches last Sunday.

Looking forward to this build. I want to see what you have planned for the skin!

The heavy rains showed up a leak in my patio roof... more distractions.

Break in the rain. Got the tow wiring installed on the car. Got the old fence gates down and 1/2 installed in place at new location. Gotta make a store run for bolts for the other half. I'll take any progress I can get.

Still dodging rains when I want to work. Got the trailer tags ! It's legal now.Tags where a big bite :( Hope to cut out the old gate posts today so I can get the trailer out when I want to.
Been working on the design for the skin. General idea is this... I snitched a gallery photo to use. The girl will be in a kimono.. it will be inlay of different woods. the gold coins the dragon has will be gold leaf. ( still a design in progress ).

Image

I worked a bit and got a sketch of more my trailer design shape and size. Door in drawing goes to low but the concept is getting there. I also need to add a touch of an curve to the roof line.
