Silver Sword - Very Basic Build

Postby Cantputt » Thu Sep 19, 2013 8:32 am

Well, here it is. Not many build shots, knocked it out in 4 days. I got a great deal on a new HF 1720lb trailer off Craigslist that had never been on the road. 6 sheets of 3/4 exterior plywood, some 2x4 to rip in half, urethane for the bottom, paint for the top, used windows from a local RV dealer, misc screws, braces, glue, caulk, hinges and latches. I'm at about $500 including the trailer at $225. Oh - Silver Sword because that's the color of the paint, looks like white or grey to me.

As soon as I pulled away the door popped open, quick trip to the hardware and problem solved.

I have since replaced the cot with a platform as I did not find the cot very comfortable. It was also too high. Built the platform 8" off the floor so I still have storage underneath and I also hinged it on the wall side for more access.

Yes, my neighbors were amazed. I live on the start of a little private road so they were driving by watching it come together. I was going at it pretty hard, no time for pics. My thought is to slap it together and then tweak it. It it falls apart in a couple years so be it I'll build another. Better to have it not so great but use it. I'm pretty happy so far.

Through the hatch images. I have now built a low shelf under the totes and a sliding shelf above them. I didn't want my "galley" separate. I will use this in the winter so coffee while still in my sleeping bag is a must.

Good job. Enjoyed the minimalist approach. :applause:

Whose windows did you use, what sizes are they?

You built it! It has great potential for ongoing improvements/additions and tweaks over time.

Thanks clermont cubby. Windows were used from a local RV dealer. $30 ea. No idea on brand. Front window is like 18 x 36(going to get a stone cover). I think the one in the door is 18 x 18 and the other side is standard egress window 24 x 36? Didn't come with inner trim rings. I just used butyl tape, drilled and screwed. Sealed up well. Great ventilation, I can have them all open in the rain.

Thanks grantstew8. The build was very satisfying. Yes the tweaks and improvements are coming. A tongue box is going on the front next, found a good choice at Menards.

When a Menard, You might want to pick up a hand full of the shopping bags, a piece of electrical conduit, some shower curtain S hooks and a couple closet pole mounts. If you put a couple bars up you can move most of the stuff off the floor. to free up floor space. Just my thoughts!!

Four days and $500 ?!? Can't beat that with a stick!! Good for you. We all continue to work on them anyway, they're never really done. But in the meantime you're camping and enjoying and can be anywhere the guy in the diesel behemoth can go, and a lot of places he can't. That's a sweet success story in my book.
