Roofermans first build

Postby Rooferman » Fri Oct 25, 2013 7:08 am

I started planning my Teardrop build last Christmas while on holiday(vacation) . When i returned home to the U.K. i began searching for a suitable chassis ,
by the end of Jan i had found an ex caravan galvenized chassis (Aalco) on Ebay and not too far from home, about 50 miles.
This is what i bought.
Image
a good base and complete with brakes.
I towed it home and began cleaning ,shortening, strenghtening and painting it.
Image
Image
Image
While i was doing the chassis work i made a drop down spare wheel holder from scrap i had lying around.
Image
Image
i made a timber frame to fit inside the angle iron frame and painted it with deep penatration bitumous primer.
Image
Fitting the floor .
Image
Image
This is an outdoor build so its been a battle with the weather all the way !
Cut the profile with my router.
Image
Image
The sides go up.
Image
I have shortened a used caravan door and fitted a pair of old boat windows.
Image
Image
Image
I bought a rough pair of fibre glass Morris minor wings from Ebay again and modified them to fit , i also picked up some 60s hubcaps .
Image
Inside framework and insulation, the insulation is Jablite in the walls and a celotex type proct in the roof ( they probably have different names in the U.S.
Image
Image
Inner walls fitted
Image
Image
Image
Another Ebay find , used boat hatch.
Image
Image
The hatch frame
Image
Starting to take shape.
Image
Image
Austin taxi rear lights.
Image
This is the start of the galley build, i have used old parts again , the sink/gas hob is from an old caravan.
Image
Image
Image
All stained and varnished and ready to fit.
Image
Fitted !
Image
Image
Cabin lockers started
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image
Fitting the aluminium skin.
Image
Image
Image
Image
The door is finished but the frame still needs work, a bit of tidying and polishing.
Image
I made a rain diverter from an off cut of aluminium and just taped it on for the pic, it will be fitted when the door fram is finished.
Image
Image
The cabin very nearly finshed.
Image
Image
I sill have quite a few things to do but the weather has not been on my side, for the last few weeks it has been raining whenever i have had time to work on the TD, so not much done lately. I am not much of a story teller but i hope you like the pics.

Wow, poof, instant tear! I am sure it didn't look like that to you, but all that progress in one post? Wow. I like the vintage looks of your details.

Awesome job. I really like that window you used. Is that an old window, or something that can still be purchased? You did a great job, now go out and use it! :applause:

Thanks. The windows are old and dont come up for sale too often, although they might be easier to find in coastal areas. i have seen a few pairs come up on Ebay but they have all been fixed rather than openers like mine.

Nice work! The windows and doors look like they were made to match.

The Wooden trim rings around the inside of them look especially nice, too.

Looks to be a well planned out build and good job of scrounging usable (and appropriate) materials.

 :applause:

Once again.
Great Job!
You obviously did not get much camping in this past season, staying home to create your new baby.
But you will be more than rewarded for your efforts once you get her out on the road.

+1.

Mad skills on the drip edge, too. It looks mass produced as if from a stamping.

Thanks for all the positive comments guys. The rain diverter started as a strip of 2mm aluminium and was bent and beaten into shape over a homemade bending block using hand tools. I made it in a similar fashion to the way we do Lead,Zinc and Copper roofwork here in England.

I love the cabinets in your galley. and the side windows are great. and I like how the light above the door matches the windows. Great looking build.
