Barndrop build

Postby andreuther » Fri Nov 01, 2013 10:14 am

Hello all!
I have been planning my build for quite some time and have been using this forum for ideas. So far I have purchased my trailer (craigslist), and built the floor. I was planning on using a harbor freight trailer but I came across this one with full sized wheels and snagged it up. I am currently in the middle of widening my 4 ft axle an extra 15 inches. My plan is based on a barn that my grandparents once had. More to come.

Really nice concept! It should be fun to build too, especially with the fit-out and equipment, keeping with the theme. Sleeping on straw? Split "stable door" ?

Remember to make the weather cock detachable though!

Obviously, it needs to be painted "Barn Red" when you get to that point. Vertical slats, too. And a weather vane.

Keep going. You've got our interest.

Screws in end grain aren't terribly strong, you might want to add some braces to your hatch spars. There will be a lot of leverage acting on the joint when you open the hatch.

I completely agree with you, however I also used glue. The screws were only used to hold the frame in place while the glue dried. The frame is quite rigid by itself, and with the skin it is stronger then it needs to be. I would take glue over a brace any day. Thanks for looking out!

you should be good on the hatch. when skinning it. the skin will lap the joint on the top.
