Grumman 2 from sunny South Africa

Postby Apocalypse Boy » Sun Mar 09, 2014 10:17 am

Hi guys, here is the progress so far on my 1'st teardrop build, based on a Grumman 2, for me it has the best shape.

Some progress on the frame has been made and the side profiles cut, I ran out of wood for the ends of the tear, will pop in tomorrow and finish it, most of this is prep and the boring stuff :D

Frame from 50 x 50 x 3 mm square tubing, nice and strong

Stabilizer jacks and jokey wheel, for some reason I don't have a pic with the axle on it, there is a rub ax on there, 750 kg max load is I think I should be ok. The frame as it is there with the axle and floor comes in at 197 kg's.

1st cut of the side walls, I'm cutting all 4 walls at once from 6 mm ply, going to have the walls from 6 mm sides and 18 mm plywood core skeleton and insulated, we don't get cold here so much, but I'd like to keep it as cool as possible.

Image

Planing to skin it in 1.6 mm brushed aluminum, was hoping for stainless but can't spare the additional 100 kg

One thing I'm battling with is the top hatch and the fenders, where to get them from and hoping that shipping wouldn't be too bad ?

Welcome to the forum. You're off to a great start!

I'm assuming you are going to do a vertical door or barn doors on the rear.

When you say top hatch, I assume you mean the roof vent? Try doing a search for caravan suppliers in your area. If you are on a budget you can try salvage businesses.

How about this? http://www.dealers.jurgensci.co.za/

... or this search for mud guards? http://www.burquip.co.za/?s=mud+guards&post_type=product

Welcome here
Good to see another ZA person here. Glad to see you moving ahead so quickly.
That frame will carry an Sherman tank with capacity to spare!
Where are you living? Many camping/caravan dealers keep several types of vent.
Are you a steel worker by trade? I see all kind of nice toys in your workspace!

Tell us more!

Happy building

Finally got some time to get on this, imagine that, having to work for a living......pfffft.

Did the skeleton out of 18 mm ply, I tried to make sure the the back wall, storage and all have bracing in so they don't attach to a hollow part

The initial plan was to use pu foam and fill the voids

But after the 1st trail run, the foam is nice and rigid, but it doesn't expand even, so off to plan B and good old styrene

I am in the Uk but got my roof vent posted over from an eBay seller in the US as I couldn't find the same thing here at all. The shipping was going to be astronomical, so I bought 4 of the things to 'average down'. I then sold two, used one and have one for 'spare'. You know, just in case I ever decide to make another one..... ;)

The roof vent is on hold for the moment, I have put the bracing in for it so I can cut it later, I might just get one form ebay in the end

Started with plywood inner skin, it went a lot easier than I thought 8)

What do you guys do other than paint/varnish ? I'm thinking vinyl ala 50 chevy ?
