Aussie Off Roader

Postby Wolfgang » Mon Sep 01, 2014 8:11 pm

I've been lurking on this site for a few months as I've been building my trailer. I liked the shape of the "Sawtooth" so based mine on that. All my trips are to the high country chasing Deer, so needed something that could handle and have enough ground clearance for the rough stuff. I've spent 20 odd years in swags and the last few in a roof top tent.... but I'm after a bit more comfort these days - starting to feel the cold :)
Some of the creature comforts I've included in mine are, full 12v power throughout with 120AH AGM battery, 100w solar panel, LED lights throughout (internal downlights and reading lights, external light bars on either side and kitchen, 21" LED TV, radio, gas instant hot water system, 2 burner gas cook top, 80 litre water tank and pump…. And I’m sure there will be more by the time I’m finished…

I put in a false floor to raise the water tank partly into the trailer frame and for extra storage space.

Lookin' good so far!

What's a "swag" some kind of tent? Are they drop bear proof? Needs a strong roof for those suckers.

80litre water tank fitted..... have some issues with the filler mounting, because the tank is fitted so high inside the trailer frame I can mount the filler in the mudguard!!! Didn't plan that very well..... will now mount it in the side wall and run the hose down the back wall of the cabin... wont get in the way, just wont look as clean as I had planned.

Beat me to it!! If you haven't slept in a swag you haven't been in the Aussie Bush! It's basically an improvement on the Drovers bed roll (Jackaroo, Cowboy)

The smallest tent I have slept in was the US Army Shelter halves... I hated those things, they were heavy for what they were and split between two guys. Took up a lot of room in the ruck as well. I think these swags might be a better deal! I know I like the dome tents better than that old heavy stuff for sure. The Marines got some nice looking dome tents made by Eureka that were way cooler than our stuff!
