TearDropOne-PRELIMINARY

Postby mikeKgaines » Sat Oct 11, 2014 8:03 pm

So. As I mentioned in my 'newbie' howdy, I am a student of classic designs (20's-60's) and a bit of a builder. SO marriage that with a lifetime love for camping and 'canned hams' and here I go! Started drawing out some ideas and such on paper a year ago, things I could tow behind my Jeep up trails and such. Jeep is gone (died a cruel death)...enter the ram 1500. This has broadened my choice of designs (and limited my back road trail riding). Thanks to y'all I have found my legs in SketchUp. posted some links for TD1 and today built a side profile mock-up.

TD1 is a BenRoy variant.

This is the finished profile. The black tape gives outlines for the pull out, door w/ Jalousie window and porthole.

Each side will have a pull out matching this, except for door. This will accommodate a queen size bed perpendicular to the center line.

So it's a start... looks like a long 'build season' here in CO coming on. Plan is to have it done in time for the "Elevation Celebration" in Bailey!

More to come...

Before you finalize the design, try doing a mockup and see
if crawling into bed from the foot [or head] is as workable as
just opening the door and sitting down on the mattress and
pivoting into position. I'd think that the sit and pivot would
be an easier way for getting in and out for sleep let alone
making the bed up. Also, two doors make using the TD so much
more convenient. Just something to consider.

Two people, two doors. Also, you might mock up your tire and fender to make sure the door position doesn't push your axle too far back.

But it looks good.

Yeah I have a more traditional plan as well and am personally fighting with the 'single door crawl over' idea. The pull out idea with the bed across the center line doesn't lend well for two doors. Was trying not to build it 5' wide to accommodate a queen size bed. Wife and I sleep on a king @ home & we have never done well on a double (24 yrs experience); one of us gets punched/kicked or kicked out.

Thanks Guys! This is why I built a $20 foamie first!
