Hobbit House Standie

Postby HarryL » Fri Dec 26, 2014 9:09 pm

I fellow Teardrop campers! I've been following everyone's builds for the past year. And have gleaned a ton of usefull information. This is my first post that hopefully will include pictures. :)

I know that some of you have been asking, who's building a Standie. Well, I've been working on one off and on since last spring, so I though you might be interested in my build.

It's 12' long, and 83" wide. It has a drop down well for standing, flanked by 35" by 76" beds on each side. When standing in the well, someone 6' tall would just clear the ceiling. I'm 5'8", my wife is 5' 4", so we've got lots of head room.

The first pictures are of the trailer frame upside down, welded and primed. A Dexter axle, 2000lb,10 degree down, with electric brakes is temporarily in place.

The next few pictures are of my wall and galley construction. I tried to follow the construction format that "Atma Travelear" used except I supersized it. His was such an elegant build!!

One wall core formed. Everything was so big that I had to build it on the trailer platform.

Picture of standing well. I used Advantac subflooring sheets to build the platform and wall cores. I've used this material in house construction! It's a bit heavy but, it's constructed with waterproof glue, doesn't warp and can stand up to the elements really well.

Here's the galley hatch being fitted.I've already skinned the inside of the camper.

Final set of pictures before I put the camper away for the winter. I took a quick 10 mile test drive to make sure it towed well, had enough ground clearance, and the wheel wells has sufficient clearance.

Inside skinned and ready for wiring and insulation.

Tows easily behind my Toyota Tundra. Don't even notice it's there. Our ultimate plan is to tow it with our 2015 Ford Escape with tow package. Tow rated at 3500lb.

And away we go! 8)

During the winter I've been building the curved trunk that will sit on the front. It will house the propane tank and a ClimateRight 2500 btu air conditioner and heat pump. I've also built the galley cabinets. Their ready for primer and paint.

The outside skin of the camper has been given two coats of West System epoxy and sanded smooth. In the spring I'll be priming and spray painting the exterior using System Three's two-part linear polyurethane coating. It's water based, user friendly and extremely durable. Designed for boat hulls.

As I get more pictures I'll post my progress

Thanks for following!! :)

I think it has the perfect profile. Not too big or small for the truck either.

You did an awesome job of scaling that profile up. I absolutely love it  Looks like it will be a beauty when done!
