And so it begins. Pt 2

Postby Plainsgirl » Wed Dec 31, 2014 1:13 am

I am so excited I just have to share this or I will burst. I have already purchased a 7'(ish) x 12' chassis, which spent its former life as a little caravan and today I scored an ARB ute canopy for $50 AUD. Now this news may not particularly float YOUR boat, but it means I have two good sliding windows, one good big window with good struts (which may become a front opening for enjoying the view whilst camping) and another fixed window (skyroof, perhaps?) for just FIFTY dollars.
My mission is to build a cool camper using mostly free and cheap salvaged components. My build-journal will not really take off till about the end of Jan but for now...I HAVE SOME WINDOWS! :D

Thanks you guys, and the same to you! I hope 2015 is filled with plenty of fun and random adventures on and off the road.

This project of mine is all about reclaimed, recycled, cheap or free. I have become quite obsessive about that! Caravan windows here are an exhorbitant price..I could never afford to have exactly what I want. I will do good doors, but I am really pleased to be able to save a quid by ahem!..'adapting' my design as bargains crop up. I have a bit of chassis-length to play with, and these side windows will be perfect for ventilating the pillow/sleeping area. I THINK I'll be able to fit a nice door as well..I guess it's time to draw a profile, now The lift-up rear door (from the ute canopy) I can 'see' at the front; I saw a great pic of a camper at the beach with the lucky campers sitting and watching the waves through a lift-up front window. I really liked that as a feature. The shape is a bit unconventional, yes, but it lifts up, has struts and seals & locks beautifully. What more could I ask for?

Hi Plainsgirl and Happy New Year from Nor Cal.
For me, one of the beauty things is taking something worth a dollar two ninety eight and making it worth a million bucks. I made my door from aluminum angle and it works well. Steel angle would work just fine and is very salvageable. Angle from bed frames tends to be hard and brittle so has limited applications. I would not use it for the frame but would for all other parts.
Some things I would feel more comfortable with investing extra and worrying less like tires. Plan safety into your budget.
Enjoy, Chris

Chris I am totally with you on that. I have collected beautiful timber and handles and..and..and..and for years, seeing the intrinsic value in them. It's only just now I am starting to reap the benefit of my..ahem!..'collecting'. I have some astonishing King Billy pine sliding kitchen doors for the galley, and some beautifully made framing Ipulled out of old benchtops and various wardrobes. Very cool. Can't wait to start!
