JAUNT ABOUT

Postby Lynn Coleman » Thu Jan 01, 2015 10:47 pm

Hi all,

It's been quite a while since I've been on these boards. A couple years ago we purchased a small boat trailer and haven't been using it for over a year, so we thought we'd build a TD with it and see if we could sell it. We're titling it the Jaunt About and will be a bit different from the Inkwell. Which btw is no longer. After we try our hands at the Jaunt About we'll rebuild another TTT with the frame from the Inkwell. My goal is to earn enough from the sale of the TD to purchase the materials needed to build the new TTT.

Anyway, here is a pic of the trailer as it stood this morning. After I figure out how to use the gallery again.

Here is a very basic, basic plan for the Jaunt About.

Thanks for the welcome back.
Today we're cutting off the pieces of steel that are not needed for the trailer since it will be for camping and no longer a boat trailer. Then we're sanding off the rust. We'll treat the steel then paint it. Next weekend we'll hope to put the floor together.

Today's progress:
Removed all the boat related items from the trailer and sanded off the rust. Shellacked the frame to get it ready for paint tomorrow. All and all it was a productive day. However, it is amazing how a few years slows you down. Sometimes getting older is the pits.

Tip: When grinding down metal, you might want to wear a mask. Paul and I have been cleaning black stuff from our nostrils all day.

Especially when cutting or grinding on a galvanized boat trailer. While metal dust and rust are not good for your lungs, toxic fumes are really bad for you.

Absolutely. This boat trailer was home made and the original maker used steel.

I guess I assumed it was galvy based on the silver color in your first post. Best to be safe.

Today's progress. We painted the trailer with a flat black paint. That's it for our weekend. Sunday's are a workday for us. Next week we'll be working on the supports and flooring.

It's been a couple of busy weeks but we did purchase most of the materials yesterday and made progress on building the floor. I hope to have pictures tomorrow. :worship:

We've put together the floor. We used a layered approach with 1/4"ply, 3/4 " foam, 1/4" ply, studded every 14.5". The picture below is the floor with the sealer on it to dry. The 2x6's are additional supports for the trailer frame under the floor.

We'll begin construction of the walls later this week. However the weekend is projected to be rainy, sigh.

I'm working outside, too. I've had almost perfect dry weather in SW Florida this winter for my Weekender2 build, mostly 70-80 degrees. I hope you aren't downwind from the Palatka paper mill.

Nope we're 28 miles north of Palatka, thankfully.

We managed to get a few things done in the past two days. Yesterday we spent a couple hours building a jig for the router to cut the curve, we didn't get a chance to use it today but hope to soon.
Here are the updated pictures the first is drying the panels on the front lawn and the second is the floor attached and painted on the trailer.
