1965 Scotty Sportsman 2bit Rebuild

Postby 2bits » Wed Jan 14, 2015 12:10 am

I found a Sportsman, my favorite tiny trailer on CL for $800 and after I saw it, I took it home for $200. I was doing him a favor but in the end it was a good deal. The kitchen, dinette, goucho bed, and walls are all in decent shape although I am sure the walls have some rot in them because they all do. It is currently the record holder for the ugliest camper ever. and within 48 hours I have made it look a hundred times better. This post will be the before pictures...

I plan to paint the exterior walls and paint the interior. No carpentry work whatsoever needs to be done except to the drop floor area. Then I will remove the door, windows and the complete roof and rebuild and replace them all. Get the electric, sink, and stove working, and oh yeah, flip the axle back to the correct position so it rides lower then go camping.

So here is the $200 special... $300, now that I put on brand new tires to get it home..

So the interior has been cleaned out and along with a stash of Playboys with Farrah Fawcett and Drew BarryMoore under the dinette seat LOL... I guess the guy had class... The benches and all the wood working looks great except of course for the roof. I'll be cleaning and painting the interior this weekend, but so far I have painted both sides. I use the "Lucy Blue" that I already had hanging around for the traditional Scotty paint scheme and I didn't want to do white so I tried tan which looked terrible so I used some brown that I had which looks pretty decent. The brown is different shades because parts of it are still wet. I painted the wheels and added a hub cap from my other camper just for the pic.

Here are the after pics...

Don't toss those Playboys! Those are collector vintage! I'll call dibs if you do want to toss them, and pick them up at the next gathering.

P.S. Your Scotty looks a whole lot better already.
I'll burn that bridge when I come to it.

Admit it, you at least took a glance at them yourself, didn't you? (I surely would have). ;)

Brad they are yours, there's a Pam Anderson too. I'll bring them to the next gathering, but I'm keeping the copies of "Classic Trucks" that was in there!

OK no more about the magazines, I'd hate to have to lock my own thread due to violation of the forum rules.

So... I avoided the original Scotty white for the paint partly because I hate anything white (I prefer earth tones) and partly because I never thought the condition of the exterior could support white, but now that I've got it painted one single color, I can see that there's very little damage at all to the sides. Only a couple dings here and there and no random screw holes. That is good news. I'm gonna leave the brown for now just because it looks good enough being painted ANYTHING lol and I want to get to work on the interior and flipping the axle, but what's everyone's opinion of the current colors? I'm usually loath to ask anyone's input but on this I just don't know.

Oh, and I pulled apart the ramshackled inside door cover (OSB and a bedsheet LOL) and found the all original door with the original style window opening that just needs glass. That's good news because it means I can rebuild this door and screen door to be original again.

Since you asked, I'm not feeling the color combo. But it's not mine, so it really doesn't matter. Now I can see why you wouldn't like the beige with the blue ( the same reason the brown doesn't work). If it were me, I would go back to the beige and change the blue to a metallic red for a little pop that still had a vintage flavor to it. whatever you decide, I know you will do a quality job.

Hey Bill, Here is how it looked with the beige... just didn't work for me. :frightened: Red isn't my style but I appreciate your input! Maybe keep the brown and do a green on top? Then it would match my living room! LOL

I think the brown is too dark, but that's just me. Maybe a not-too-loud yellow would go with the top color, whatever that color is. White doesn't clash with anything, except your personal taste. I'm hopeless with this kind of thing. Maybe strip the paint and polish the aluminum? Copper plate?

Thank you for that which may no longer be mentioned :shhh: in this thread. :shake hands:

If you don't like white (witch I personally think would look goo ) what about a military Colour scheme like olive drab or khaki. ...something along those lines would look good

How about instead of white, a lighter shade of blue? Might be hard to cover the brown, but would be a nice combo tone-on-tone. Silver would look good, too.

It's funny because when I painted it beige it was hard to cover the original brown, then when I painted it brown, it was hard to cover the beige haha. I am definitley resanding all of it again before doing any more. I know that stripping the paint and polishing is a major undertaking and I don't think I am ready for that kind of commitment, I do like that look though. I didn't think about just painting it silver tho... I am going to ponder the silver and white. I really like that blue on top because it covers really well for some reason and is close to the original color scheme. Thanks for the ideas guys!

I re painted the bottom half white to look like the original design today and I love it! It still needs a second coat and a redo of the aqua and silver trim, but this looks so clean and really nice compared to how I bought it. I am pretty much decided to do the interior in the original aqua as well. The interior is next after I flip the axle so it rides lower and at the correct level. I also removed the redneck door window and was pleased to find the original door window opening unmolested and ready for new glass. I am going to rebuild the entire door, so it is nice that I will be able to retail the original style window.
