The tiny teardrop

Postby Sam_1688 » Sat Mar 07, 2015 5:07 pm

Well after looking at these for a few years I have decided to build a nice small one to pull behind the mk1 fiesta for our wee trips away.

We are going to attempt to make it as small as possible withing it feeling cramped.

The frame will be 3mm thick 50mm box section and ordered it from a local blacksmith as they were more than half the price than online..

Also I have ordered avonride suspension units, 10" wheels and tyres, hitch, jockey wheel and lights with 7 core cable.

That leaves my plan for the body, I'm thinking of 50mm styrofoam with 4mm plywood on the inside and exterior coated with fibreglass.

The only thing I haven't agreed on is the drawbar, I'm thinking a straight drawbar but will do some more research before I agree on it

Hopfully get started asap but will keep updated but really looking forward to getting it built and using it :D

Sam,

If you are considering small, I really recommend the refrigerator box
testing procedure. Mock up your proposed cabin in cardboard and take
a nap in it. Its much easier to alter that mock-up than rebuilding your
tear. It'll give you a good chance to decide on windows and possible
necessary skylight.

Hi Sam welcome from another Mini fan from the other side of the world.
Good luck with your build. The scratch build for your frame is good, you can often find it quicker, easier and in the long run cheaper than modifying something else.
With your draw bar, if you are tossing up between a single pole or "A" frame and using the 50x50, a piont to consider. My general purpose trailer has a single 75x75, and some times it gets a funny little wobble to it, which feels like the draw bar flexing sideways. I could probably cure it with a light brace each side, but so far hasn't been too much of a problem.
