Anyone use Masonite for a roofing material under the aluminum skin or rubber roof.

I use it at work alot and wouldn't recommend it personally.
It swells and delamination when wet and drys out as a weaker product...that's just my two cents worth

I used it on the roof of our tear. Then covered it with canvas and paint.
Been 3 years now, stored outside uncovered in sun, rain, and snow.
Absolutely no problems.

Glue and canvas it would probably be as good as ply or anything else but unless it's completely sealed it's unstable

Masonite is a great product to use as roof sheathing. I've been using it for years.

Its durable, economical and you can almost tie it in a Knot.

And Yes it does have problems when it gets wet, just like any other material.

The secret is when building a roof....Don't let it leak!

Do you use 1/4 or 1/8 Masonite?

Actually that's not a sealer, its the glue for the Filon. But I do coat the Masonite with Paint in all areas unless I'm using a Rubber Roof, then I coat the glue right to the Masonite, and use any kind of paint to coat the rest. Its just a sealer.

And in most cases I use 1/8"

traditionally, oil based paints were used with canvas pressed in. If you had a good finish on your work with no gaps or cracks, the oil primer, undercoats, and all the top coats would wrap the whole thing in a membrane. With all the old caravans ive seen, the window/ body/flashings or the skylight were where the leaks were, Of course these leaks gravitated to the floor, rotting the floor and lower walls, then the chassis. additionally external elements also destroyed the drawbar and wheels. Hehe that's very depressing........but we fix them!
