My new trailer build

Postby Mushin » Tue Dec 29, 2015 12:55 pm

After using my modified HF trailer with Tepui RTT for over 3 years with many miles and improvements and 0 issues, I sold my trailer. Why you ask? The only reason we sold the trailer was simply because of setup and takedown time. It simply took to long once we reached our camp. Loved the RTT, the kitchen, the trailer, hated setup/takedown.
So what now? I'm building a teardrop type thing, get to camp open door go to bed, wake up close door drive out, easy stuff.
Pics so far:
Image
Frame 5x8 feet, 2x3 inch 3/16 wall, tongue 2 1/2 inch square 1/4 wall
Image
Floor sealed, insulated, bolted down
Image
Walls going up 5 feet high and wide x 8 feet long
Image
Here's the shape and spars being installed, spars suck to do and are time consuming!
I know my design is not new or groundbreaking, but I like the look and it will work great for our off road adventures, more to come....

Looking good! I know I'm done with setup too. I am currently building one about the same size. Keep it up! Look forward to watching the progress.

Looks good. What do you think the frame weighs?

Frame weight is about 360lbs according to steel supply place that sold me the stock. Is beefy n overkill but that's what I wanted.

Front window cut and doors cut. More framing/spars, working my way to the rear. Did I mention that spars suck!

Neat build! I am interested to see how this turns out because mine is a similar shape (box with a 45 degree angled front window). I'm also at a similar place in the build where I have insulation installed but have not yet put up the interior walls. I am looking forward to hearing the answer to your question about sealing the interior, as I know condensation can accumulate in there if not vented enough at night, especially in cold weather.

Nice looking build.
There shouldnt be any need to do anything other than just insulate it.
What were you planing on lining the interior with?
I built mine from the inside out so i didnt have the challenge of trying to line it afterwards, are you using something flexible like carpet for the interior?

Thx for the replies. I'm gonna use bamboo flooring for the interior walls.
Should be starting on that next week after electric and insulation. Then rear galley! Then exterior, then.....

I glued my insulation to the inner wall skin (thin ply) using water based contact adhesive. The adhesive forms into a rubber like skin, so I figure that this takes the place of a dedicated moisture barrier, otherwise I wouldn't have bothered. The inside of the cabin is sealed up pretty well with polyurethane, and I will be well ventilated, so I'm not that worried about moisture getting into the walls from the inside.

Hope to have most everything on the inside and galley done after my next break at work.
Here's a question, how many times do you recon you get in and out of your trailer during a build!
