The Mighty Quind

Postby shanna7 » Tue Jan 05, 2016 12:59 pm

We've been quite silent on the forum, but over the last several months, we've been making good headway on our tear, "The Mighty Quind" - we're making it for a Pacific Coast highway tour for our 15 year wedding anniversary. We plan on leaving mid-August for a month long trip.

Why "The Mighty Quind"? It's a Triple Entendre. First, 15 year wedding anniversary = Quindecennial. Second, the song "Mighty Quinn" starts with "Everybody's building the big ships and boats" and our design is inspired by midcentury wooden boats. And third: Come follow The Mighty Quind - but maybe not too closely! (we've been making hotboxing jokes from day 1 of the build)

We have our build journal on a separate blog for our friends and family to follow: http://mightyquind.com, but I'd like to have a thread open here too for when we have hiccups. The teardrop build starts with this post from Jan 2013.

Quind's a trolley top Grumman 2 design with rear barn doors like the 2+2H, mainly following Steve Frederick's build method. Once we committed to the Sapele exterior ply, we committed to the idea of it being "a vision in chrome and mahogany" (aka sink way more $ into it than we probably should)

We've updated the design from this cartoon, but you get the general idea:

Very nice design, kind of reminiscent of one of Doug Hodder's teardrops, The Rocketear.

I like Sapele, easy to work with and looks great when finished.
I made a shed door from some and have a guitar made of Sapele.
Looks like the two of you are having a blast building this one.
Now you've got that song stuck in my head.

I'm a total fan girl of the Rocketear! We're coming from Seattle, and the "official" start will be Port Townsend. Where are you?

We are in the Puyallup/South Hill area.
If you have the time, come to our annual pot luck at The Old Country Buffett next month in Federal Way.
More information here in the T.O.W. Line events calendar
Bring along some pictures to share if you like.

I Think you were answering my question.
We are from Westbank B.C. (in the heart of the Okanagan Valley) about 5 1/2 hours from you.
I am the Chapter Director for the PNW Chapter of the Tear Jerkers.
Over the past year we have created an "Official Roster" for the PNW members of the Tear Jerkers; which now stands at 138 members with 79 Teardrop Trailers.
Our goal is to work with other Teardrop Organizations to promote Teardrop Camping here in the Pacific North West.
We have a number of events in the works for 2016 and have some very active members.
The Tear Jerkers would love to have you join, and be included on our Roster.
Please PM me if you are interested in becoming a member.

I like the chromed bead moldings.
Are you making your galley with flipper walls?
Something like Dan Hazard did?

It will be interesting to see how it all gets sealed up against the elements.

Very carefully. If I had a dollar for each hour we've discussed it, I would have enough to buy the seals and trim. ;)

The hardware is an assortment. The door hinges are fridge hinges, and everything else is marine sourced. The handle is a latch and the little thing above it attaches to a deadbolt.
