Cascadia Grumman, first time build

After a loong time of dreaming, many hours of research and learning Sketchup, I am finally going to begin my first build!

My design goals were to keep it simple and as light as possible. The floor is 9' long (with an additional 1' bubble at the front), 5' wide, 4' tall. I'm super fortunate that my dad has a good buddy who is a very capable welder, so they actually fabricated everything you see in the pictures (he's making slick looking teardrop shaped fenders too!). Right now it doesn't quite weigh 600lbs, so we'll see what it adds up to in the end.

Next week we'll start on the walls. I'm going to sheet the outside with 1/4" marine ply that I will finish with a clear coat. The steel square tubing you see is 1", so I'm going to have 1" insulation in there, and will probably do the interior walls with baltic birch. The roof will also be sandwiched with 1" insulation and probably luan.

Anyway, wish me luck. I have no business attempting this, so we'll see how it goes! Let me know if you're curious about anything.

That's one killer frame! Those hatch support beams are terrific! You could get such a steampunk vibe going with them!

Ironically, it is the first night in a long time that I did not have a glass of wine?
But we did drink a 1/2 a bottle of tequila before supper..........Canadian Strawberry Margaritas!
All in the name of research we are trying to perfect the recipe, before camping season starts in 40 days.
Have we stolen enough of this poor guys build thread?

haha, I guess it is a funny shaped Benroy. Maybe more of a grumman than. The title of this thread is a bit tongue and cheek anyhow, maybe now I can change it to something even more grandiose.

FYI, in case you didn't already know, the default subject line for post within a thread come from the very first post. Very nice looking little trailer there. You say you're going to skin with plywood. Is that only on the sides, or are you going to cover the sheet metal (aluminum?) top/ends as well?

Nah, gonna paint a yet to be determined substance onto the aluminum.

Day 2

Still have all my fingers and having a great time with my dad!

Got the outer walls and doors up (courtesy of Frank Bear's outfit, Vintage Technologies), the hatch insulated and set in.

Tomorrow is wiring and insulation.
