The Whiskey Jack

Hey oh. Long time lurker here. have been researching my eyeballs out for the past few months. finally ready to begin.,,,,, i think

A little about me.

Im a canadian, I am building just outside of Edmonton Alberta

while this is my first build of a trailer, i am not new to construction, i have 2years schooling and 10+ years experience in carpentry related trades, and close to another decade spent for my Journeymans ticket in Electrical. Just started up a small general contracting business with a few buddies.

I have designed a collaboration of many ideas, big and small. I knew i wanted passthru storage just like the big trailers, running water, lights, a place for a hot shower (even if it was short lived and everyone could see me) and a place for me, the wife, and the pup to sleep.
It needed to be light enough for our Rav4 to tow it (1500lbs max), basically it would have been built already if weight wasnt a concern!

This was my initial profile design that all of my plans are based upon.

163560
and the is the Grasshopper style i will be actually building, just fell in love with the retro vibes upon discovery.
didnt see a need to update my plans as not much will actually change with the build.

most of these are self explanatory i think, but ask away.

I am building a 5wx5tx10l camper ontop of a 4x8 folding utility trailer that i picked up at crappytire.
most plywood being used is 5x5BB with some 4x8 pine for the joist material

will be using 2 layers of 1/2" pink XPS foam insulation where possible
aluminum skin. was able to get 5x10 sheets of .06 something for a reasonable price

from outside in my wall/ceiling composition will be
aluminum skin,
pl premium
1/2" xps foam,
pl premium
1/2" BB skeleton with additional 1/2" pieces for hard points( so 1" in ply in structural spots)
pl premium
all gaps filled with more 1/2" xps
pl premium
1/8" rotary mahogany ply( basically luan but it is gorgeous)

Floor deck
3/4" BB tounge and grooved to make 5x10
Blue skin waterproofing membrane added to the underside

the floor joist are 1/2" ply and will be dadoed into the floor ply, glued and screwed or nailed where needed.
a top "lattice" support will hold the joist square and also support the interior floor

interior floor will be a few layers of 1/2" xps foam in different orientations and glued together. will rest right ontop of the lattice, and ontop of that will be 1/4" BB that will be the actual cabin flooring.

the 4x8 folding utility i picked up on sale for 680
it wasnt wired proper so i removed all lights and wireing, and any other useless crap
removed its foldabilty and bolted it together.

163570

hit up HD and windsor ply for a quick shopping trip
this is what 900 loonies looks like

163575163571163572

added tongue and groove to 2 sheets of 5x5 3/4" BB glued them together for the deck.
applied some super stinky and sticky contact cement, and then blue skinned it!. this stuff is for waterproofing concrete foundations and it should work well on the bottom of my camper.

163574163573
with the glue still drying I impatiently began laying out my floor joist dados!

alrighty, last post for today to get you guys caught up with me

so far i have spent a few evenings on it.

163576
with a little 1/2" straight dado bit and a couple straight edges, I have dadoed all of my joists, and wall spots!

163577163578

using my (way too expensive but honestly so worth every penny) Festool track saw, i ripped down my cheaper(cause it is ugly and not pretty like BB) 1/2" pine ply

only took 2 cuts to rip down all both sheets into 12" ish strips

163581163579163580

lopped them all to size with a skilsaw and speed square
did a couple lapped joints for rigidity

163584

realized after dryfitting the cooler that i forgot how to math. needed to make the kitchen a wee bit bigger. no big, ill turn this into a walnut inlay or something

163582163583

built my floor support "lattice"
strips of plywood glued and pinned together, added additional pieces where any structure was concerned
this will hold the weight of the interior cabin and hold the cargo area all together.

163587163588163585163586

completed lattice with a dry fit for some of my gear.

the center open square will be a pull up table for those rainy days with some storage for things like boardgames

some storage access at the rear that i can get to thru the bottom cabs, probably put tools and other not so needed thins in there.

2x pass thru storage lanes that i can access rom the exterior are up near the tounge.

163589

needed some better wheel wells. chopped up an old unused rain barrel that happened to be the right diameter. gave it some paint and boom.

That is all for today, more to come this week I am sure.
:D
